Piscataway, NJ -- The Rutgers Scarlet Knights put an unheard-of 30-0 run on Virginia Tech in the early stages of the first half and simply buried the Hokies on their way to an 85-52 victory. Rutgers led 32-3 with less than 8 minutes to go in the first half, and Tech never had a chance. Bryant Matthews kept his hold on the Big East scoring lead, though, pouring in 29 points on a day when no other VT player scored more than six.

The Hokies (10-11, 3-7 Big East) took a 3-2 lead over Rutgers (14-8, 6-6) with 18:06 to go in the first half on an "old-fashioned" three-point play by Matthews. But in the next ten minutes, Rutgers bombed their way to a 30-0 run, taking a 32-3 lead with 8:03 to go in the half on a layup by Juel Wiggan. At that point, Rutgers was 13-17 from the field, including 6-8 from three-point range, while the Hokies were 1-12 and had turned the ball over eight times.

Matthews shot 10-23 from the field, but his fellow starters -- Coleman Collins, Zabian Dowdell, Jamon Gordon, and Markus Sailes -- shot a dismal 4-19. For the game, the Hokies were 18-58 (31%) from the field. The Hokies were outplayed in every statistical category except turnovers, where they had 11, to 11 by the Scarlet Knights. Rutgers shot 28-52 (53.8%) from the field, including 11-23 (47.8%) from three-point range.

Tech still holds sole possession of 12th place in the Big East over Miami, who is 13-12 overall and 3-8 in the conference. Tech's next game is Wednesday, Feb. 18th, at Villanova (7:30 p.m.). The Wildcats are 13-10 (5-5 Big East, 9th place). The Hokies are 1-5 against Villanova since joining the Big East but usually play the Wildcats tough, never losing by more than 12 points and usually keeping it close. Last season, VT hammered 'Nova 88-63 in Blacksburg and lost 92-81 in overtime in Philly.
