Rutgers 85, Virginia Tech 52 Piscataway, NJ -- The Rutgers Scarlet Knights put an unheard-of 30-0 run on Virginia Tech in the early stages of the first half and simply buried the Hokies on their way to an 85-52 victory. Rutgers led 32-3 with less than 8 minutes to go in the first half, and Tech never had a chance. Bryant Matthews kept his hold on the Big East scoring lead, though, pouring in 29 points on a day when no other VT player scored more than six. The Hokies (10-11, 3-7 Big East) took a 3-2 lead over Rutgers (14-8, 6-6) with 18:06 to go in the first half on an "old-fashioned" three-point play by Matthews. But in the next ten minutes, Rutgers bombed their way to a 30-0 run, taking a 32-3 lead with 8:03 to go in the half on a layup by Juel Wiggan. At that point, Rutgers was 13-17 from the field, including 6-8 from three-point range, while the Hokies were 1-12 and had turned the ball over eight times. Matthews shot 10-23 from the field, but his fellow starters -- Coleman Collins, Zabian Dowdell, Jamon Gordon, and Markus Sailes -- shot a dismal 4-19. For the game, the Hokies were 18-58 (31%) from the field. The Hokies were outplayed in every statistical category except turnovers, where they had 11, to 11 by the Scarlet Knights. Rutgers shot 28-52 (53.8%) from the field, including 11-23 (47.8%) from three-point range. Tech still holds sole possession of 12th place in the Big East over Miami, who is 13-12 overall and 3-8 in the conference. Tech's next game is Wednesday, Feb. 18th, at Villanova (7:30 p.m.). The Wildcats are 13-10 (5-5 Big East, 9th place). The Hokies are 1-5 against Villanova since joining the Big East but usually play the Wildcats tough, never losing by more than 12 points and usually keeping it close.
