Blacksburg, VA -- Virginia Tech won their fourth in a row and broke a two-game losing streak to William and Mary, crushing the Tribe 80-54 in Cassell Coliseum. The Hokies were led once again by Bryant Matthews, who scored 22 first-half points on his way to 32 for the game, the third time this season he has scored over 30 points.

The Hokies (7-3) had lost two straight to William and Mary (3-5) under former coach Ricky Stokes, falling 48-46 on a buzzer-beater in Cassell in 2000, and losing 60-52 in Williamsburg last season. This game, however, was only in doubt for four minutes. William and Mary led 5-4 at the first media timeout, with 15:47 to go, but the Hokies responded with a 14-2 run and took an 18-7 lead at the next media timeout, with 11:50 to go.

The Hokies continued to pour it on, taking leads of 30-10 and and 37-15 before going into half time up 46-21. In that first half, Matthews outscored the Tribe 22-21 by himself, and the Hokies forced 16 W&M turnovers. VT also outshot William and Mary 48.5% (16-of-33) to 20.8% (5-of-24).

The second half was a bit more even, as the Hokies outscored the Tribe just 34-33, and W&M actually shot a higher percentage (40%, 10-of-25, to 36.4%, 12-of-33). For the game, the Hokies forced 26 William and Mary turnovers, leading to 35 points. William and Mary scored just 15 points off of Tech's 13 turnovers. Rebounds were even at 41 per game, and the Hokies held W&M's leading scorer, Adam Hess, to just 13 points on 5-of-20 shooting. Hess was averaging just over 21 points coming in.

VT played without point guard Zabian Dowdell, who was at home in Florida attending the funeral of his grandmother. Tech still managed 13 assists to 13 turnovers. The Hokies went with a starting lineup of Jamon Gordon (7 points, and a team record-tying 8 steals), Markus Sailes (7 points), Shawn Harris (4 points), Matthews, and Coleman Collins (10 points, second on the team). Matthews added a team-high 11 rebounds to his 32 points, for his fifth double-double of the season.

Virginia Tech next plays ECU in the Constant Center in Norfolk on December 27th, at 7 p.m. For information on a Tidewater VT Alumni Association chapter pre-game social, please click here.
