Blacksburg, VA --
The Virginia Tech Hokies used a stingy defense combined with a flashy offensive effort to down Maryland-Eastern Shore
102-50 at Cassell Coliseum on Tuesday night. The 102 points was the most scored by the Hokies since they defeated
Hawaii-Hilo 101-73 in the 1996-97 season opener. Freshman forward Deron Washington led the Hokies in scoring for the
second game in a row with 24 points.
For the second time this season, Tech dominated the turnover margin by forcing 35 turnovers, while only committing
11. They won the turnover battle in the opener against Loyla (MD) 26-14. Jamon Gordon, who led the Big East in steals
last season, had 4 steals for the Hokies in the game, leading the team in that category. Gordon also had 2 points, 4
rebounds and 9 assists.
Tech established their dominance early, jumping out to a 19-1 lead with 12:55 remaining in the first half. UMES tried
to get back in the game by going on a 9-0 run to bring the score to 19-10 with 10:33 remaining in the half, but Tech
fought back and gradually extended their lead. The Hokies took a 49-20 lead into halftime.
Seth Greenberg was able to play a lot of seldom used reserves in the 2nd half and gradually extend the Hokies’ lead
at the same time. Sophomore forward Chris Tucker played 9 minutes in the ball game, scoring 6 points, grabbing 3
rebounds and dishing out 2 assists. Highly touted point guard Marquie Cooke was suspended for the first half for showing
up late for a team meeting, but he played 15 quality minutes in the 2nd half. The freshman from Nansemond River High
School scored six points, had 4 assists and had a steal. He did not commit a turnover.
Shawn Harris came off the bench to play a big game for the Hokies as well. Carlos Dixon was charged with two fouls in
the first 3 minutes of action and did not play for the rest of the first half, which opened the door for Harris to get
increased playing time. Harris scored 14 points on 5-6 shooting.
Other major contributors for the Hokies were sophomores Zabian Dowdell and Coleman Collins, who each scored 12
points. In addition to his 24 points, Washington also added 5 rebounds and 2 assists in only 22 minutes of action.
The Hokies were behind in total rebounds at halftime 21-14, but played more physically in the 2nd half and finished
even with UMES for the game. Both teams had 36 total rebounds as well as 13 offensive rebounds. Freshman wing Wynton
Witherspoon led the Hokies in rebounding with 6.
Virginia Tech (2-0) returns to action Sunday afternoon when they hit the road for the first time this season to take
on William & Mary. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 pm, and the game will not be televised.
