Georgetown 70, Virginia Tech 50

Washington, DC -- The Georgetown women, losers of five of their last six games coming in, made short work of the 19th-ranked Hokie women, never trailing on their way to a 70-50 win over Virginia Tech. Georgetown beat the Hokies in nearly every phase of the game and ended the game on a 22-9 run.

All-American candidate Rebekkah Brunson scored 23 points and had 9 rebounds, both game highs, in leading Georgetown (8-7, 2-3 Big East). The Hokies (13-3, 3-2) were fronted by Ieva Kublina, who 18 points on 8-of-16 shooting but just 2 rebounds, as Tech was outrebounded 35-24 on the day. The Hoyas hit 25-of-49 shots (51%), the first time this year a Tech opponent has shot over 50 percent. Georgetown outscored Tech 20-7 from the free throw line 

The two teams traded a couple of big runs early in this game to wind up tied at 23 with less than five minutes to go in the first half. Georgetown scored the last seven points of the half to go up 30-23 at half time, then controlled the game throughout the second half. Tech trimmed the lead to five points at 33-28 and then to seven points at 48-41, but Georgetown ran the Hokies off the floor down the stretch, going on a 16-5 run to put the game out of reach at 64-46 with less than three minutes to go.

Dawn Chriss added 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting and led VT with six rebounds. Carrie Mason played all 40 minutes but shot just 1-of-7, scoring 5 points. The loss was Tech's third Big East road loss in a row. The Hokies travel to Pittsburgh (6-9, 2-3) for a 7 p.m. contest on Wednesday, Jan. 17th.
