South Orange, NJ -- Virginia Tech outscored Seton Hall 12-2 over the last 11:37 of the game, erasing a 40-36 deficit
and grabbing a big road win over a Pirate team that had been stout at home and was ahead of the Hokies in the Big East
standings going in.
VT led this one 28-27 at half time, and the two teams combined for just 35 points in the second half, including just
ten points in the last seven minutes. After a 9-2 Seton Hall run turned a 34-31 Tech lead into a 40-36 Seton Hall
advantage with 11:37 to go, the Hokies scored the next eight points over a nine-minute span, going up 44-40 with 2:40 to
go on a layup by Erin Gibson.
Seton Hall finally broke their long scoring drought with a couple of free throws, the second of which made it 44-42,
Tech, with 1:04 remaining. On Tech's next possession, the Hokies ran the shot clock down, and Dawn Chriss missed a
jumper that Seton Hall rebounded with 32 seconds left. Chriss made up for the miss by drawing a charging foul on Seton
Hall's Melissa Langelier with 24 seconds left, giving possession to Tech. Langelier then fouled Carrie Mason with 23
seconds left, and Mason hit both free throws to put the Hokies up 46-42.
Kerri Gardin added two more free throws with 12 seconds to go for the final margin. The win was a big one, coming
over a Seton Hall team that was #88 in the RPI ratings but was 9-2 at home, including a win over Notre Dame and a narrow
six-point loss to Connecticut.
Tech was led by Chriss with 13 and Gardin with 11. Gardin also led all rebounders with 12, as the Hokies outrebounded
Seton Hall, the best rebounding team in the league, 38-34.
The Hokies are now 18-6 on the season (7-6 Big East). Seton Hall falls to 14-9 (6-6). Tech's next game is at
Providence (4-18, 0-11) on Saturday at 7:30.
