Blacksburg, VA -- The Virginia Tech women's basketball team got 16 points from Ieva Kublina, snapped out of a close first-half battle, and put away Miami of Ohio in the season opener for VT, 77-60.
Kublina had 7 rebounds to go with her 16 points, and she was supported by Erin Gibson, the only Hokie starter to shoot over 50 percent. Gibson made 4-of-7 shots, scored 14 points, and had a game-high 10 rebounds. The Hokie starters alongside Kublina and Gibson were sophomores Carrie Mason (12 points, 1 assist, 3 TOs, 1-7 from three-point range), Dawn Chriss (12 points, 4 assists) and Kerri Gardin (5 points).
The Hokies jumped out to a 14-6 lead, then gave up 10 straight points to go down 16-14. The game seesawed for a while, then the Hokies finished the half on a 19-8 run to lead 41-28 at the half. The Hokies held the lead through the second half, and despite shooting just 26-60 (43.3%) for the game, were never seriously threatened the rest of the way.
VT won because they limited Miami to 32.4 percent shooting (24-of-74) and outscored the Redhawks 22-9 from the free throw line. The Hokies are now 1-0 on the season, and Miami falls to 0-2.
