Blacksburg, VA -- The Virginia Tech women closed out their season at 21-6 (10-6 Big East) with an easy 31-point win over the St. John's Red Storm, 69-38. The Hokies played poorly on offense in the first half but still managed to thrash St. John's by opening the second half with a 24-8 run.

It was Tech's last home regular-season game of the year, and seniors Ieva Kublina, Davina Simmons, and Brandy Fowler got the start. Kublina, playing the second game in front of her parents, who are visiting from Lativa, shot poorly, going just 2-9 from the floor and scoring 5 points, all in the first half. It didn't matter, as Tech took leads of 17-5, 27-16 at the half, and 51-24 with 8:25 to go.

Freshman Kirby Copeland led the Hokies in scoring for the second time this season with 12 points, in just 12 minutes. Kublina led Tech in rebounding with 7.

Despite forcing 19 first-half turnovers by St. John's (10-17, 4-12), the Hokies led by just 11 at half time, because Tech shot just 9-26 (36.4%) in the second half and had 13 turnovers of their own. The second half was a different matter, with the Hokies blistering the nets for 15-24 shooting (62.5%) and outscoring St. John's 42-22 after intermission. St. John's finished with almost as many turnovers (35) as points (38).

The Hokies finished #8 in the 14-team Big East and will play #9 Georgetown in the first round of the Big East Tournament on Saturday, March 6th at 2 p.m. in Hartford, Connecticut. Georgetown whipped the Hokies 70-50 on January 17th. The winner will play top-seeded Connecticut on Sunday at 2 p.m. None of the first or second-round games are scheduled to be televised, according to the Big East web site.

Tech finished tied with West Virginia and Rutgers at 10-6 in the league, but finished lower than both of them due to regular-season losses to both. For the final Big East standings, click here, and for the Big East Tournament seedings, click here.
