Confessions of a Stats Freak 2001
by Jeff Holland, 4/12/01

Note from TechSideline.com: former Tech defensive tackle Jeff Holland (1991-1995) still follows the Hokie football team religiously and likes to keep his own unique set of data that you aren't likely to find anywhere else. Last year, Jeff shared his statistics with us in Confessions of a Stats Freak, and this year, as he does every year, he has updated his statistics. So without further ado, here is Jeff's updated "Confessions of a Stats Freak 2001."

  • All statistics came from Virginia Tech media guides, Hokie Huddlers, or other official sources.
  • All statistics are up to date as of 3/26/01.
  • Most information starts from 1993 (when VT started to win and Big East round-robin play started) unless otherwise noted.
  • Before round-robin Big East play began (1991 & 1992) the highest ranked team was declared Big East champion.
  • Technically, Miami did not win the Big East title in 1995 because no team on probation can win or share the title.
  • All games played at neutral sites (bowl games and Temple 95) are considered away games.
  • Some subjects are highly subjective, such as: how do you distinguish between a night and day game? For example, what about a game that starts at 3:30 PM in late November? What is the definition of "bad weather"? I defined things as best as I could.
  • There is a small possibility that I have made some computational errors.
  • Remember, take these statistics with a grain of salt.

Section 1: Top Home Crowds at Virginia Tech

Since the capacity of Lane Stadium has increased, there is no need to update the top crowds (see last year's Confessions of a Stats Freak), because all 6 home games in 2000 are now the top 6 Lane Stadium crowds. However, VT’s records with crowds over 50,000 can be updated.

VT record 50,000+ (1980 - present) = (25-9)
VT record 50,000+ (under Beamer) = (22-7)
VT record 50,000+ (1993 – present) = (20-2)
