Beerman's Picks
By Beerman, 11/16/00

Each week this season, I will be posting a column previewing the upcoming weekend's Big East and Top-25 match-ups. All rankings are from the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. Picks are against the spread (that means I'm not picking winners, just the line), and are for entertainment purposes only.

Last Week: I got worked, and bad! He, it's all good. Happens…

This Week: Rivalry weekend is upon us! Florida-FSU could be for all the marbles, and a couple of Pac Ten matchups could make a big difference where we go bowling. Of course, this means the season is winding down … *sniff*

Not in Action: #7 Virginia Tech, #10 Nebraska, #15 Texas, #23 Texas A&M

Top-25 Games:

Saturday (11/18)

#1 OKLAHOMA (-25) vs. Texas Tech

Well I think we can all agree on Oklahoma at number one now, can't we? That was a helluva game Saturday. Usually I'm big on channel surfing, but with the exception of halftime I watched that whole thing. Wow.

And Texas Tech. Well, at the beginning of the year I made a comment about how playing in a preseason game against New Mexico meant only that the winner would need to scrape up six more wins to become bowl eligible. Somehow The Raiduhs have managed to do it, and come into Norman sitting at 7-4. They will leave at 7-5, and will next be heard from in some minor league bowl game.

This could be a bit of a let down game. Texas Tech runs an offense very similar to Oklahoma's, and could put some points on the board. Still, an upset would be quite a surprise.

Pick: TT

#2 Miami (FL) (-13) @ SYRACUSE

Last time they walked into the Carrier Dome, the Canes walked out on the wrong end of a 66-13 score. That, ladies and gentlemen, is called motivation.

Pick: Miami

#3 FLORIDA STATE (-12) vs. #4 Florida

Floridians have little sympathy for the journalists and campaign staffers in town. [Wednesday's] Tallahassee Democrat pointed out that those overstaying their hotel welcome are committing a second-degree misdemeanor. "Football is religion. Football is king," explains Gerald Ensley, a columnist with the paper. Compared to the election, "the game is of far more consequence here."  -- 11/15 The Washington Post

Pick: Florida

#5 Washington (-8) @ WASHINGTON STATE

Wazzou's not very good. Sure, they beat Southern Cal on the road last week, but come on … who hasn't?

My way-out-on-a-limb prediction for this week is that UDub will trail at some point during the second half, and won't pull away until late in the game.

Pick: WSU

#6 Oregon (+4.5) @ #8 OREGON STATE

Would somebody please explain to me why a game between two schools in the Pacific Northwest is called "The Civil War"?

No matter, this is the first time this one's had major implications in a loooooooooooooooong time. Oregon gets all the pub, but OSU rates out stronger in most of the computers. Funny how life reflects nature, as we all know Ducks and Beavers are natural enemies.

Pick: Oregon State

#9 Kansas State (-21) @ MISSOURI

We all should thank Kansas State for effectively eliminating Nebraska from BcS consideration. Now all they have to do is go and lose one more game, either this one against Missouri (*ROFL*), or in the Big Twelve Title Game against Oklahoma, and then they're out of it also.

Pick: Kansas State

#11 Notre Dame (-22.5) @ RUTSGERS

Playing the likes of Rutgers, UPitt, West Virginia, and Boston College does not count as playing a Big East schedule. Until they toe it up against us, Miami, and Syracuse, NBC's South Bend station is nothing more than a leech on our bowl rewards.

This line moved. Notre Dame was favored by more a couple of days ago. That means someone's been betting on Rutgers. That's sooooooooooooooo cute!

Pick: ND

#12 OHIO STATE (-2.5) vs. #18 Michicken

The Big Game. Here it is, for what it's worth. Now Ohio State does have an outside shot at an at-large BcS berth, but I doubt that it happens.

OSU is the better team, but that's never stopped Michicken before. As long as John Cooper's running things in Columbus, the Wolverines are an odds-on favorite.

Pick: U of M

#13 MISSISSIPPI STATE (-16) vs. Arkansas

Geez. How in the world did Mississippi State let LSU go and work themselves into the driver's seat in the SEC West? Piss poor in my opinion. Kind of like Arkansas' season.

Pick: MSU

#14 CLEMSON (-7) vs. South Carolina

This has been a great season for both of these teams…especially considering where they've been the last few years. Still, it says something that they're both envying the State of Oregon right now.

Pick: USC-South

#16 TCU (-12) vs. Texas, El-Paso

UTEP, at 8-2, can actually steal the WAC title from the Horned Frogs today. Wouldn't that be something?

Pick: UTEP

#17 PURDUE (-16.5) vs. Indiana

Give him a decent defense, a better running game, and a good PR man, and Antoine Randle El is Michael Vick. He's got none of those, however, so the Hoosier QB is looking like a solid mid-round draft pick.

Only in the Big Ten, could the leader lose by twenty, late in the season to an also-ran, and finish the day still aimed at the Rose Bowl. Perhaps the MAC is stealing more recruits than we think?

Pick: Purdue

#19 Auburn (-1.5) @ ALABAMA

If Alabama plays like they've been for the last few weeks, this one will be over by halftime.

They won't tho, because this is the Iron Bowl. Mike DuBose may be a lame duck, but any Bama player with an ounce of pride will get up for Saturday.

Pick: Auburn

#20 Southern Mississippi (-5.5) @ CINCINNATI

Jeff Bower's done a heckuva job at Southern Miss. Would be kind of a shame to see him uproot and go coach at Bama.

Pick: Cinci

#21 GEORGIA (6.5) vs. Mississippi

As often as Quincy Carter's been injured this year, I still have no idea who Georgia's backup quarterback is. Ole Miss has been somewhat of a disappointment this year, but as a mid-level SEC team they are guaranteed a bowl somewhere!

Pick: Georgia

#22 Georgia Tech (-10) @ MARYLAND

I see no reason why the Jackets shouldn't win this one by about 30 points.

Pick: Georgia Tech

#24 NORTHWESTERN (-8) vs. Illinois

Put up 52 on Michicken, and then they can't score on Iowa? IOWA????? Geez, the Big Ten is then very definition of Mediocre this year.

Without Kittner, Illinois is sunk.

Pick: Cats

#25 TENNESSEE (-20) vs. Kentucky

Even the factories go through down years. Welcome back Tennessee, we kept your seat warm for you.

Pick: Vols

Other Big East Games:

Saturday (11/18)

WEST VIRGINIA (+3) vs. East Carolina

It would be awfully nice if the Mountaineers could send Don Nehlan off with one last quality win. Also, whether it be us or Miami, I want the Big East represented in the Orange Bowl. Go schedule strength!

Pick: WVU

TEMPLE (+9) vs. Pittsburgh

Despite being only 4-6 (and they looked sooooooooo promising early), Temple is still 3-1 out of conference. Viva la Big East!!

UPitt's going bowling, and if we pull down the Fiesta, they'll likely get the Gator. Pittsburgh vs. Clemson…now that could be exciting!

Pick: UPitt

Game of the Week to Watch: UF-FSU

Upset Special: Michicken over tOSU

Last Week: 7-14-1 … man I'm glad the season's almost over!

Season to Date: 118-123-3

Upset Special: 3-9
