Each week this season, I will be posting a column previewing the upcoming weekend's Big East and Top-25 match-ups. All rankings are from the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. Picks are against the spread
(that means I'm not picking winners, just the line), and are for entertainment purposes only.
Last Week: 10-1. Smacked Wahoo State around. And here I was all stressed about our coaching. Probably the second best season in Tech football history ('95 and '96 can make good arguments) and I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as I should have. Welcome to the big time folks.
This Week: A few conference title games, Army-Navy, and a Mountain West - WAC matchup of truly Lilliputian proportions.
Not in Action: Most everyone really.
Saturday (12/02)
Top-25 Games:
#1 Oklahoma (-2) vs. #7 KANSAS STATE
Have we made it through a year yet, where at least one of these silly conference title games didn't screw up the whole MNC picture? Since this is the only one with any impact, all signs point to upset! OU won the first one, in Manhattan to boot. Yet the Sooners have been limping a bit down the stretch. Almost lost to
TAMU, played OSU waaaaaaaaaaay too close. And all their hopes of an MNC ride on this game. We'll see how they rise to the challenge.
Pick: KSU
#8 Florida (-9.5) vs. #17 Auburn
*Yawn*
Didn't we just see this a few weeks ago? Didn't Florida use and abuse the Tigs? That's what I thought.
Pick: Florida
Western Michigan (-6) @ MARSHALL
WMU went in to Huntington and took down the Herd once already this year. A repeat performance will not be easy. I don't know. Maybe it's just me, but it doesn't seem very fair to me to let Marshall host the MAC title game. Given the likelihood of them participating in it and all…
Pick: WMU
Army (-2.5) @ NAVY
Ugly. That's really the only way to describe each of these teams. And yet it really doesn't matter. This is the epitome of the one-game season. And you know what? The Cadets are gonna take it. Navy's been just plain putrid this year, and I've seen nothing to indicate they know how to win a game.
Pick: Army
HAWAII (+7) vs. Nevada - Las Vegas
Normally I don't pick games like this, but when you're one of the only four games taking place I make exceptions.
Hawaii went from 0-12 to 9-4 and are back to 3-8 this year. Maybe they ought to bring Dick Tomey back?
Pick: UNLV
Game of the Week to Watch: Western Michigan vs. Marshall. If for no other reason than because I think this might be the only time in history that the MAC is getting a nationally televised major network game. Nah, I'm kidding. Army-Navy is as big as they come.
Upset Special: KSU over Okie
Last Week: 7-3
Season to Date: 139-132-3
Upset Special: 5-9
