Around the Big East
by Matthew McKinley, 11/29/02

Well, here we are. It’s UVa week, and the natives are restless. Can the Hokies turn their season back around with a win over France? I see white flags in the near future……

Last Weekend’s Games

(#21) West Virginia 21, (#19) Virginia Tech 18

The Hokies again give up big yards on the ground, as the Mountaineers rack up 263 yards on the way to their first win over the Hokies since 1997. The Hokies had a chance to send the game into overtime with a 28 yard field goal, but a shot at the win proved disastrous as WVU intercepted Randall’s pass in the end zone. All does not look dark for the Hokies, though, as the offense played pretty well (over 400 yards of offense) and special teams came up big with a blocked punt, in addition to a safety that can be chalked up to the ST’s kick-blocking reputation. If the defense can come back around for the UVa game, the Hokies will do fine.

(#1) Miami 28, (#18) Pittsburgh 21

Miami narrowly held onto the #1 spot as Pitt(sburgh) beat Miami in every phase of the game except for the one that counts, the scoreboard. Outgaining the Hurricanes on the ground and in the air, the Panthers had a chance to tie the game late in the fourth quarter, but their 4th and 5 pass from the Miami 20 went incomplete. One interesting stat of the game, third down efficiency: Pitt(sburgh) 10-19, Miami 1-9.

Boston College 36, Temple 14

Boston College held Temple to 59 yards rushing as they easily took care of the Owls in what must’ve been a cavernously empty Veteran’s Stadium. BC’s Brandon Brokaw, sharing time in the backfield with Derrick Knight, rushed for 58 yards and 3 TDs on the day, with Knight adding another 76 yards and a score. Temple falls back to next-to-last place in the Big East, and must be thinking, "Thank God for RUT[S]gers".

(#7) Notre Dame 42, Rutgers 0

Speaking of RUT[S]gers, did anybody REALLY give them any chance at all to win this game? Notre Dame rushed for more than 10 times the yards that RUT[S]gers did and this game was never really in doubt. Are we sure that we’re kicking out the right Big East team?

This Weekend’s Games

Rutgers (1-10, 0-6) @ Boston College (7-4, 2-4), Saturday @ 12:00pm, NESN (?)

*yawn*

(#1) Miami (10-0, 5-0) @ Syracuse (4-7, 2-4), Saturday @ 1:00pm, ABC/ESPN Gameplan

Does Miami have a dome curse much like Virginia Tech? I don’t think they do, and they’ll be undefeated until after their game against the Hokies.

(#21) West Virginia (8-3, 5-1) @ (#18) Pittsburgh (8-3, 5-1), Saturday @ 1:00pm, ABC/ESPN Gameplan

This years Backyard Brawl has shaped up to the best one in a long time, as the winner gets to send 20,000 fans to Jacksonville, and the loser gets to send 20 fans to Arizona. At least we hope so. The Insight.crap bowl better not pick us over the loser of this game. I want to go to Charlotte, as we have a great tailgate planned.

Virginia (8-4, 6-2) @ (#19) Virginia Tech (8-3, 3-3), Saturday @ 3:30pm, ESPN

Here we go, folks. This game really could define the season for the Hokies. There are a few things I want to see for Lee Suggs -- I want to see the whole stadium decked out in orange and maroon, and I want us loud. Throw in a few snot bubbles while you’re at it.

Games to Watch from the Parking Lot

There’s plenty of great college football action this holiday weekend. Here’s a look…….

Texas A&M @ (#10) Texas, Friday @ 12:00pm, ABC

Mmmm…..more turkey sammiches, and Texas A&M beating the [heck] outta Texas on the tube. Niiiiiiiice. Watch this one through the end, and then turn to...

(#17) Louisiana State @ Arkansas, Friday @ 2:30pm, CBS

... the second quarter of this game. The winner goes to the SEC Championship game to face Georgia, and wouldn’t that be nice if it turned out to be LSU.

(#21) West Virginia @ (#18) Pittsburgh, Saturday @ 1:00pm, ABC/ESPN Gameplan

See above. This should be a heck of a game. Just make sure you tape the 4th quarter, because you should be making your way into Lane by then.

Georgia Tech @ (#5) Georgia, Saturday @ 3:30pm, CBS

Am I on crack you ask? Picking a game to watch at the same time as the Tech game? No, I’m not, thank you very much, but I am picking this as a game to watch due to the miracle of VCRs. Tape this game. Georgia’s going down, and Jacket fans will get to clip the hedges for the third straight time in Athens.

(#7) Notre Dame @ (#6) Southern Cal, Saturday @ 8:00pm, ABC/ESPN Gameplan

This game has the potential to upset the Hokies’ Tire Bowl plans. A Notre Dame loss here has a good chance of getting them knocked out of the BCS and into the Gator, which would push all the other Big East teams down a bowl rung. That would probably send the Hokies to San Francisco. As painful as this sounds, we really need Notre Dame to win here. Maybe I’ll use this time to work on one of the seventy cases we Lounge Lizards need to down this weekend, because I know I’ll have to drink heavily to root for Notre Dame.

Oh, and one more game to pick……

Atlanta @ Minnesota, Sunday @ 1:00pm, FOX?

Honestly, I have no clue how the TV thing works for the NFL, but if this game is on at your house, watch it. GO FALCONS!

I hope you enjoyed your Thanksgiving folks, and that you remembered to give thanks that you are a Hokie, and not a Wahoo. You might also want to take my advice on the turkey, cranberry sauce, and mayo sammiches. Get the cranberry sauce that comes right out of the can, not that jellied crap, cut a slice of the can-shaped mold and stick it on a turkey sammich. Mmmmm good! And one more piece of advice for you:

Happy Holidays!
