GAME RECAP

Mark Hartsell threw for 273 yards and three touchdowns and the Boston College defense held off a late drive en route to a 20-14 road victory over 20th-ranked Virginia Tech in a Big East battle.

The Eagles (1-1, 1-0 Big East), who were beaten 38-6 by Ohio State last week to drop out of the rankings, defeated Virginia Tech for the second time in three years. It was the first-ever meeting of the schools in Blacksburg and the game was the season opener for the Hokies.

"Give Boston College credit," said Hokies coach Frank Beamer. "That was a totally different football team than the one we saw lose to Ohio State in the opener. Boston College simply executed better than we did and deserved to win the football game."

Hokies quarterback Jim Druckenmiller drove his team to the B.C. 19-yard-line with an eight-yard pass to Michael Stuewe. However, a dropped first-down pass by Cornelius White at the six-yard line haulted the momentum and preceded three more incompletions.

Boston College junior defensive end Nick Gianacakos had a key sack of Druckenmiller during the drive.

"In football, it isn't so much how you start, but how you finish," said Beamer. "We have to work hard to get better. I still think we can be a very good football team."

Virginia Tech fullback Brian Edmonds capped a drive by scoring from one yard out, closing the gap to 20-14 just 35 seconds into the fourth quarter.

Boston College increased its lead to 20-7 on Hartsell's third touchdown pass, a three-yard throw to Micheal Hemmert with 7:55 left in the third. Hartsell's four-yard touchdown pass to Dennis Harding with 9:26 left in the second quarter gave Boston College a 14-0 advantage.

"Mark Hartsell played well and our line did a very good job," said Eagles coach Dan Henning. "I think Virginia Tech has the best defensive front in the league this year."

Hartsell completed 24-of-38 passes, including 10 to Steve Everson, and was not intercepted. Everson had 142 yards.

The Eagles opened the scoring just over three minutes into the game, when Todd Pollack caught Hartsell's first touchdown pass from 11 yards out.

Despite being outgained, 433-337, Boston College controlled the ball for 33:37.

"The big objective when you play a game like this is to maintain field position, which we did," said Henning.

Virginia Tech (0-1, 0-1) pulled within 14-7 with 9:07 left in the first half, when Bryan Still scored on an 80-yard touchdown pass from Druckenmiller. Still had three receptions for 105 yards and Druckenmiller completed 21-of-42 passes for 296 and a touchdown.
