GAME RECAP

Cincinnati scored all 16 of its points in the second quarter and made up for two heartbreaking losses to start the season with a 16-0 blanking of Virginia Tech.

Linebacker Brad Jackson put the Bearcats (1-2) on the board 3 1/2 minutes into the second period with a 71-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Sixty-four seconds later, fullback Orlando Smith scored on a four-yard run to make it 14-0. Eric Richards converted a 41-yard field goal with 5:34 left to cap the scoring.

Cincinnati had suffered a five-point loss to Kansas in its first game and was defeated on the final play last week against Kansas State.

Virginia Tech (0-2) had only 77 yards rushing on the day while Jim Druckenmiller completed 12-of-33 passes for 135 yards and three interceptions.

Cincinnati's Eric Vibberts was 9-for-23 fr 197 yards. Wide receiver Anthony Ladd caught three passes for 94 yards.

The Bearcats recorded their first shutout since October 3rd, 1992 against Kent State.
