GAME RECAP

Jim Druckenmiller threw a 47-yard pass to Bryan Still to set up a touchdown and Dwayne Thomas ran for 165 yards and a score as Virginia Tech handed 17th-ranked Miami only its second loss ever in the Big East Conference, 13-7, in the league opener for both teams.

Miami (1-2) was 19-1 in Big East play before today, with the other defeat coming at West Virginia in 1993. The Hurricanes, who are off next week before facing top-ranked Florida State on October 7th, have lost two games in Septemner for the first time since 1984.

Druckenmiller's long pass to the one-yard line was followed by a one-yard touchdown run by Thomas, giving the Hokies a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter. Thomas carried 24 times with a long of 39. Druckenmiller completed 9 of 16 passes for 97 yards.

Virginia moved ahead 10-0 on a 44-yard field goal by Atle Larsen in the second quarter before Danyell Ferguson of the Hurricanes scored on a one-yard run to cut the lead to 10-7. Ferguson carried 21 times for 75 yards.

Larsen kicked a 20-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter.

Miami quarterback Ryan Collins sprained his right shoulder in the second quarter and did not return. Collins completed 6 of 10 passes for 138 yards and was intercepted once before the injury.

Miami drove deep into Hokie territory twice in the fourth quarter. The Hurricanes drove to the 22- before backup Ryan Clement threw two incomplete passes. Miami then advanced to the Hokie 24 in the final minute before Clement was sacked for a loss of 10 yards.

Yatil Green of the Hurricanes caught eight passes for 171 yards.

Miami also saw its 71-game winning streak against unranked opponents end. The last loss came against Maryland in 1984.

Virginia Tech (1-2) scored its first-ever win over Miami after 12 defeats. The Hurricanes had won their previous 20 games against teams from the state of Virginia.
