GAME RECAP

Jim Druckenmiller connected with Jermaine Holmes on a 73-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter and Atle Larsen kicked four field goals as Virginia Tech rallied for a 26-16 victory over Pittsburgh in a Big East game.

Virginia Tech (2-2, 2-1 Big East), coming off an upset of 17th-ranked Miami of Florida last week, has won all three meetings between the schools by a combined score of 134-44. Pittsburgh (2-3, 0-1) has lost three straight after opening the season with two victories.

The Hokies outscored Pittsburgh, 26-7, in the second half and have allowed just 13 second-half points in four games.

Pittsburgh held a 16-13 lead before Druckenmiller hooked up with Holmes on a 73-yard touchdown pass with 10:42 remaining to give the Hokies a 20-16 lead. Larsen added field goals of 26 yards and 36 yards in the fourth quarter to accout for the final margin.

Druckenmiller completed 15-of-27 passes for 312 yards and Bryan Still caught five passes for 139 yards for Virginia Tech. Billy West rushed for 113 yards on 23 carries for Pittsburgh.

Chris Ferencik kicked a 37-yard field goal in the first quarter and added a 40-yarder and a 31-yarder in the second to give the Panthers a 9-0 lead at halftime. Virginia Tech cut the deficit to 9-7 on a 15-yard run by Dwayne Thomas 4:46 into the third quarter.

Chris Schneider's two-yard run with 3:45 to play in the third extended Pittsburgh's lead to 16-7 before Larsen kicked a 34-yard field goal to make it 16-10.
