GAME RECAP

Jim Druckenmiller threw three touchdowns as Virginia Tech took over first place in the Big East Conference with a 31-7 victory over 20th-ranked Syracuse.

Syracuse (6-2, 3-1) held a 7-0 lead after the first quarter on a 19-yard run by Rob Konrad. Virginia Tech (7-2, 5-1) held the Orangemen scoreless the rest of the way en route to its seventh straight victory.

Druckenmiller completed 16-of-27 passes for 224 yards and three touchdowns and Ken Oxendine carried 19 times for 118 yards to lead the Hokies.

Atlee Larsen kicked a 21-yard field goal early in the second quarter to get Virginia Tech on the scoreboard at 7-3.

Druckenmiller hit Brian Edmonds with a 25-yard touchdown at 11:38 of the second and added a 29-yard score to Jermaine Holmes at 14:26 to make the swcore 17-7 at the half. Druckenmiller remaining hot in the third quarter, hitting Dwayne Thomas with a 25-yard touchdown at 3:01. Marcus Parker scored on a one-yard run in the fourth quarter to make the final 31-7.

Virginia Tech entered the game number one in the country against the run, number three in scoring defense and number nine in total defense and backed up the lofty statistics.

Syracuse gained just 167 total yards, and had only 54 on the ground.

With the win, Virginia Tech avenged a 28-20 loss to Syracuse in the Carrier Dome.

Syracuse's Donovan McNabb completed 12-of-24 passes for 113 yards.
