GAME RECAPQuarterback Scott Frost and Damon Benning ran for two touchdowns apiece and defensive lineman Jason Peter returned a fumble 31 yards for a score as sixth-ranked Nebraska overpowered number 10 Virginia Tech, 41-21, in the Orange Bowl in Miami.
The Cornhuskers (11-2) scored 17 straight points in each half and piled up 415 total yards as they won their third straight bowl game. The last two resulted in national championships, but Nebraska was denied an opportunity for an unprecedented third straight title this season with losses to Arizona State and Texas.
Benning had 95 yards on 15 carries, including scoring runs of 33 and six yards in the third quarter. Frost, who also completed 11-of-22 passes for 136 yards, had a five-yard TD run in the second quarter and a 22-yard scamper to seal the win with 3:26 to play.
Jim Druckenmiller was 16-of-33 for 214 yards and three TDs for the Hokies (10-2), who received a bowl alliance berth for the second straight year. But his second-quarter pitchout attempt was smothered and picked up by Peter, who rumbled into the end zone to give Nebraska a 17-7 lead with 3:36 left in the first half.
