GAME RECAP

Freshman Shyrone Stith and Brian Edmonds scored first-quarter touchdowns and Shayne Graham added three field goals as number 18 Virginia Tech scored the last 16 points en route to a 30-14 Big East Conference victory over Rutgers.

The Hokies (3-0, 2-0 Big East) celebrated their home opener with their 13th straight win, the second-longest streak in the nation behind top-ranked Nebraska. The victory was also Virginia Tech's eighth straight in the Big East Conference.

Virginia Tech stormed to a 14-0 first-quarter lead on Stith's three-yard run, his fifth touchdown this season, and Cornelius White's five-yard catch from Jim Druckenmiller, who completed 24-of-37 passes for 282 yards.

Druckenmiller became the seventh all-time passer in school history with 2,904 yards and moved into sixth on the school's all-time TD passes with 21.

Rutgers (1-3, 0-2) rallied to tie the game on a one-yard run by quarterback Corey Valentine in the second quarter and a 10-yard strike from starting quarterback Mike Stephans to Rob Seeger with 12:13 left in the third quarter. The touchdowns were Rutgers' first in three games.

Graham recorded field goals of 35 and 31 yards 1:49 apart in the third quarter and added a 25-yarder with 10:49 left in the game. Edmonds finished the run of points with a 19-yard scamper with 6:25 left.

Edmonds rushed 12 times for 80 yards and Smith added 75 yards on 18 carries.

Virginia Tech recorded four sacks -- two each from All-American defensive end Cornell Brown and Danny Wheel. Brown's sack of Stephans in the third quarter caused a fumble which led to Graham's second field goal. Brown added eight tackles.

Stephans, a fifth-year senior who also plays third base for the Scarlet Knights baseball team, made his second start and completed just 13-of-29 passes for 196 yards.

Steve Harper caught six passes for 102 yards and Chad Bosch added three receptions for 37 yards for Rutgers.

Virginia Tech leads the all-time series 4-3, including a 4-1 mark since both schools joined the Big East.
