GAME RECAPKen Oxendine ran for 147 yards and 18th-ranked Virginia Tech stopped a pair of fourth-quarter two-point conversions to hold off Miami, 27-25, and remain atop the Big East.
Oxendine carried 36 times for his fifth 100-yard rushing game this season. Virginia Tech (7-2, 5-1 Big East) defeated the Hurricanes for the third straight time after losing the first 12 meetings between the teams. Lamont Pegues, Marcus Parker and Cullen Hawkins each ran for touchdowns for the Hokies, who are a half-game in front of Syracuse for Big East lead.
"This was a heckuva fooball game with a lot of big and exciting plays," said Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer. "There is no question in my mind that we took Miami's best shot tonight. Gosh, those Miami receivers made some unbelievable catches and their running backs were teriffic. (Rover) Pierson Prileau made some really big plays, especially the interception at the end on the two-point attempt. That was a game saver."
Al Clark completed 10-of-12 passes for 153 yards for Virginia Tech, which took a 27-19 lead with 3:58 to go on Shayne Graham's 22-yard field goal.
True freshman James Jackson carried just nine times for 142 yards and two fourth-quarter touchdowns for Miami (4-5, 2-3). Jackson's 12-yard touchdown run cut the deficit to 27-25 with 1:58 remaining. Miami went for two points but Prioleau stepped in front of wide receiver Reggie Wayne and intercepted Ryan Clement's pass in the end zone. Prioleau returned it past midfield before he was caught from behind by Jackson.
Miami went for an onside kick and Wayne recovered the ball, but Hurricanes' cornerback Dwayne Starks touched the ball before it went 10 yards, automatically giving the Hokies possession.
"Again I thought the onsides kick was one of those judgement calls," said Miami coach Butch Davis. "I clearly felt like the ball touched one of the Tech players and we made the play. Our kids executed the play exactly like we practiced. The official said we touched the ball (after seven yards)."
Jackson ran off left tackle and raced down the sideline for a 78-yard touchdown that pulled the Hurricanes within 24-19 three minutes into into the fourth. Miami went for two points and Clement, rolling out, threw a pass toward the right sideline. Tight end Daniel Franks juggled the ball and fell out of bounds when he came down with it.
"James Jackson had an outstanding performance," said Davis about the true freshman. "He has come in the second half of the season and stepped in and delivered the performances we needed. He is an awfully good player."
Ryan Clement was 14-of-23 for 212 yards and gave Miami a 7-0 lead with a six-yard run, 4:32 into the game.
Graham's 22-yard field goal cut Miami's lead to 7-3 with 5:35 left in the opening quarter. James Edgerrin's four-yard scamper capped a 12-play, 92-yard drive and gave the Hurricanes a 13-3 advantage with 36 seconds left in the first.
Virginia Tech closed within 13-10 on Parker's seven-yard run with 2:02 left in the first half. Hawkins had a 14-yard run, giving the Hokies a 17-13 edge with 6:43 to go in the third. Pegues had a 27-yard TD burst with five seconds left in the third to make it 24-13.
