Game StoryAl Clark threw a pair of touchdown passes and four different players ran for scores as Virginia Tech routed East Carolina, 38-3, in the season opener for both schools.
Clark completed 8-of-13 passes for 106 yards as Virginia Tech (1-0) defeated the Pirates for the seventh time in 11 all-time meetings. Ricky Hall, Lamont Pegues, Shyrone Stith and Andre Kendrick ran for TDs for the Hokies, who improved to 73-31-1 in season openers.
The Pirates have lost seven of nine season openers in the 1990s.
Brantley Rivers' 30-yard field goal accounted for the Pirates' only score 3:54 into the second half, but Clark tossed a 29-yard pass to Ken Handy less than three minutes later, giving the Hokies a 24-3 advantage.
Virginia Tech visits Clemson next Saturday before beginning Big East Conference play at Miami on September 19th.
East Carolina (0-1) has games against Chattanooga and at Ohio before hosting Army in its Conference USA opener on October 3rd.
