Game Story

BLACKSBURG, Virginia (Ticker) -- Michael Vick kicked off his Heisman Trophy campaign by throwing for two touchdowns and running for two more as 10th-ranked Virginia Tech crushed Akron, 52-23, in its delayed season opener.

Vick, who did not play in the fourth quarter, completed 7-of-11 passes for 186 yards, including TD strikes of 59 yards and 34 yards to Emmett Johnson and Andre Davis, respectively, in a 5:22 span bridging the first and second halves.

"I think our offense was consistent," said Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer. "We got stopped a couple of times in the second half, but we kept pounding the ball."

A 6-1, 214-pound sophomore who finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting last season, Vick also carried eight times for 102 yards, a 12.8 yards per rush average.

His most spectacular play came in the opening moments of the second quarter. On the option left, Vick kept the ball and raced down the sideline before cutting back towards the middle of the field and scampering into the right corner of the end zone for a 63-yard score.

"If Michael Vick isn't the greatest football player in college today, I don't know who is," Akron coach Lee Owens said.

Virginia Tech (1-0), which has won 13 of its last 14 games, was scheduled to begin its season this past Sunday, but the Black Coaches Association Classic against Georgia Tech was called off due to weather problems.

"I am pleased with the win and proud of our football team," Beamer said. "I thought (this game) showed the youth of our defense today. But I feel confident that we will be a better football team Thursday night (against East Carolina) than we were today."

After a sluggish first quarter, the Hokies took control with a 28-point second quarter. Vick, who opened the scoring with a 16-yard TD run, made it 14-3 with his spectacular option run.

Less than four minutes later, Lee Suggs plowed his way for a one-yard score. Suggs carried a team-high 14 times for 90 yards.

After the Zips (0-1) answered with a one-yard touchdown by Brandon Payne, safety Willie Pile picked off Butchie Washington and raced 11 yards to give Virginia Tech a 28-10 advantage.

Akron scored again as Washington hit Lavel Bailey on a 37-yard score, but Vick answered with his 59-yard strike to Johnson just 56 seconds before halftime. Johnson totaled 77 yards on two receptions.

Just 4:28 after the break, Vick found Davis on a slant pattern over the middle and the Hokies had a commanding 42-17 lead.

"We were really disappointed with the defense, obviously, we hope to play better than we did today but a lot of that is Michael Vick," Owens said. "There are certain plays that he makes that regardless of how good you are or what kind of defense you're in, he's going to beat it."

Cornerback Corvin Amos had a 16-yard fumble return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter for Akron, which is a member of the Mid-American Conference and has failed to beat the Hokies in five attempts.

The Zips did manage to total 410 yards compared to 549 for Virginia Tech. Washington completed 14-of-30 passes for 248 yards and a touchdown with one interception and Jimme Gray carried 12 times for 80 yards for Akron.

"Give Akron credit," said Beamer. "Their quarterback played very well, than than that interception returned for a touchdown. (Washington) directed their offense very well. (Akron) has good skilled people."

The Hokies, who have won 26 of their last 29 games at Lane Stadium, improved to 75-31-1 in season-opening games.
