Game Story

CHESTNUT HILL, Massachusetts (Ticker) -- Boston College had no answers for Virginia Tech's ground attack as quarterback Michael Vick ran for 210 yards and three touchdowns to lead the fourth-ranked Hokies to a 48-34 Big East Conference victory.

Lee Suggs added 145 yards and a pair of scores as Virginia Tech (4-0, 2-0 Big East) rolled up 420 rushing yards against a Boston College team that had been allowing only 154 per game.

Vick needed just 16 carries to set the school record for rushing yards by a quarterback, breaking the mark set by Bob Schweikert against Richmond in 1963. One year after doing in the Eagles with his arm, Vick scored on runs of two and 11 yards in a 21-point second quarter that gave the Hokies a 35-20 halftime lead.

He broke off an 82-yard touchdown early in the final period to make it 48-27. Last year, the Heisman Trophy candidate passed for 290 yards and three scores in a 38-14 home win over Boston College. Today, he was only 5-of-17 for 61 yards.

"Our No. 7 makes some plays," Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer said of Vick. "We got two plays, one we call and he turns whatever he wants into. Vick was great, but I still told my team -- and this is in no way a slam on BC -- but we still have to improve and play better."

Suggs, who carried 22 times, scored on a 24-yard run with 9 1/2 minutes left before halftime to snap a 14-14 tie.

William Green ran for 117 yards and two scores and Matt Hasselbeck threw a pair of touchdown passes to Jamal Burke for Boston College (2-2, 0-2).

"There's no way to prepare for Michael Vick because you never know what he's going to do," Eagles coach Tom O'Brien said. "Vick and that entire team played great today."

The Hokies raced to a 14-0 lead midway through the first quarter as Jarrett Ferguson capped an 80-yard drive with a one-yard run and Andre Davis scored on a 71-yard punt return. It was the second time this season Davis has brought a punt all the way back.

Boston College answered less than three minutes later on Cedric Washington's 15-yard run, then tied it 88 seconds into the second quarter on Hasselbeck's six-yard toss to Burke.

Hasselbeck was 10-of-23 for 78 yards with an interception.

Virginia Tech took the lead for good with an 80-yard drive as Suggs covered the last 24 yards. Less than four minutes later, Vick went in from the 2 to make it 28-14.

A fumble by Vicks set up Green's one-yard plunge, but Vick made amends with an 11-yard TD just over a minute before halftime. The 82-yard touchdown bolstered his Heisman hopes as he eluded a defender at the line of scrimmage and hurdled another before breaking into the clear. He faked a final would-be tackler near the Boston College end zone.

"Once the ball is snapped, I'm going to do what has to be done," Vick said. "It was an all-out blitz. I didn't have a chance to pass. I pulled it out and ran and the middle just opened up for me. And after that, it was just me being me."

Virginia Tech has won the last five meetings and leads the all-time series, 6-2.
