Game StoryMIAMI (Ticker) -- The biggest game in Big East Conference history quickly became a dud because the big star was a huge non-factor.
Taking advantage of Michael Vick's injured ankle, third-ranked Miami dominated the first three quarters and broke a five-game losing streak against No. 2 Virginia Tech with an easy 41-21 victory at the Orange Bowl.
Ken Dorsey threw three touchdown passes, including two to Santana Moss that totaled 122 yards, and Virginia Tech's Dave Meyer was rattled early in his first career road start as Miami (7-1, 4-0 Big East) remained in the national title race.
"There's no doubt we're one of the top teams in the country," Dorsey said.
The Hurricanes also took control of the Big East race and can clinch their first league title since 1994 and earn a spot in the Bowl Championship Series by winning two of their final three games against Pittsburgh, at Syracuse, and against Boston College.
The loss snapped a 19-game regular-season winning streak for Virginia Tech. Its last regular-season loss was to Virginia on November 28, 1998.
Meyer, a fifth-year senior who was starting for only the third time, was largely ineffective. The Hokies (8-1, 6-1) trailed 14-0, with three minutes to go in the first quarter, prompting Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer to turn to Vick.
A Heisman Trophy favorite for most of the season, Vick suffered a severly sprained right ankle late in the first half of last week's victory over Pittsburgh. Trying to play through the injury, he was unable to be a hero.
Clearing struggling to find his rhythm, Vick likely fumbled away Virginia Tech's only real chance to get into the game. The Hokies had moved inside the Miami 30-yard line when Vick, running the option left, was hit from behind by cornerback James Lewis and lost the ball.
Linebacker Chris Campbell recovered at the 27 and seven plays later Dorsey dumped off a pass to tight end Jeremy Shockey, who proceeded to break two tackles while rumbling 44 yards down the right sideline to make it 21-0 with 3 1/3 to go before halftime.
Vick saw action on just 19 plays and accounted for a meager 14 yards and spent the entire second half watching from the sideline with his shoe untied.
The Hurricanes struck on their sixth offensive play of the game. Dorsey lofted a poss over the middle for Moss, who ran a slant pattern towards the middle of the field from the right side and caught the ball in stride before completing the 42-yard touchdown.
Two possessions later, Dorsey hooked up with Reggie Wayne on a 41-yard completion to the Virginia Tech 23, setting up James Jackson's 17-yard TD run that made it 14-0 with 2:53 to play in the first quarter.
Dorsey completed 10-of-22 passes for 276 yards in a redemption performance after being picked off three times in last week's narrow victory over Louisiana Tech. He and Moss also hooked up on an 80-yard score in the fourth quarter.
Najeh Davenport had a 50-yard scoring run just over six minutes into the third quarter for a 28-point Miami lead and the rout was on.
The Hokies scored three meaningless touchdowns in the final period as Lee Suggs plowed his way for scores of one and three yards and Meyer hit Emmett Johnson on a 69-yard TD strike.
Suggs carried 23 times for 121 yards and Meyer was 13-of-25 for 225 yards.
James Jackson rushed for 138 yards and cornerback Edward Reed returned a fourth-quarter interception 44 yards for a score for the Hurricanes.
Today marked the first-ever Big East Conference game in which both teams ranked in the top five.
