Game Story

BLACKSBURG, Virginia (Ticker) -- Michael Vick and Lee Suggs brought Rutgers back to earth in a hurry.

Vick provided 224 yards of total offense and Suggs rushed for a career-high four touchdowns as eighth-ranked Virginia Tech rolled to a 49-0 victory over Rutgers in the Big East Conference opener for both teams.

Vick, who accounted for just 119 total yards in last week's rout of East Carolina, completed 10-of-18 passes for 120 yards and a touchdown and added 11 carries for 104 yards and a score before being taken out with 4:46 left in the third quarter. All of Vick's rushing yards came in the first half.

Rutgers (2-1), which started off 2-0 for the first time since 1994 by beating Buffalo and Villanova, was held to 15 first downs and outgained, 527-241, in suffering its seventh straight road loss.

Virginia Tech posted its eighth straight victory over Rutgers and has outscored the Scarlet Knights, 288-77, in its last five victories in the series. The Hokies have started off 3-0 for the fifth straight year.

"I thought it was another good step for our football team," Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer said. "Our offense made some plays and the kicking game made some plays. Everybody joined in for a team win and that is what it takes to be a really good football team."

Mike McMahon, who entered the game with a Division IA-leading 10 touchdown passes, completed 12-of-36 for 149 yards and three interceptions before leaving the game in the third quarter with a shoulder injury.

Virginia Tech scored on its first three possessions to take a 21-0 lead in the first quarter.

Suggs ran it in from seven yards out to give the Hokies a 7-0 lead 5 1/2 minutes into the game. After the Scarlet Knights were stopped on downs on their own 14, Vick threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Emmett Johnson just two plays later.

After Rutgers missed a field goal, Vick led the Hokies on an eight-play, 70-yard drive as Suggs' second touchdown of the game from three yards out allowed the Hokies to build a 21-point advantage with two minutes remaining in the period.

Vick leaped into the end zone for an eight-yard scoring run early in the second quarter for a 28-0 bulge.

"We didn't do the things that we needed to do early in the game," Rutgers coach Terry O'Shea said. "I watched this opponent write their script every game and we were part of that script-writing today."

Virginia Tech continued its solid play on special teams this year by blocking its fourth kick of the season on Rutgers' ensuing drive. Defensive back Eric Green got his hands on a punt by Mike Barr and Suggs recovered at the Rutgers 21.

The Hokies needed only three plays to capitalize on the blocked punt as Suggs ran it in from a yard out for a 35-0 lead.

"They (Rutgers) are a team that is throwing the ball extremely well and can throw the ball well," Beamer said. "I think our defense really stepped up. Overall, it is very encouraging. If you look at this football team, everyone is contributing. I believe our team is really getting better."

Vick passed for 105 in the first half as Virginia Tech outgained Rutgers, 304-131, before intermission. The Hokies limited the Scarlet Knights to minus-5 yards rushing in the first quarter.

Suggs, who rushed for 76 yards on 16 carries, ran in from three yards for his fourth score of the game early in the third quarter.

The school record of six rushings TDs in a game was set by Tommy Francisco in 1966.
