Game Story

BLACKSBURG, Virginia (Ticker) -- Not this time.

In its first visit to Lane Stadium since a shocking upset in 1998, Temple did not fare as well, falling to third-ranked and Big East Conference rival Virginia Tech, 35-13.

Heisman Trophy candidate Michael Vick accounted for two touchdowns and Lee Suggs ran for two short first-quarter scores as the Hokies (5-0, 3-0 Big East) extended their regular-season winning streak to 16 games.

"I think we played well, for the most part," Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer said. "We've got some potential out here, but we've got to get some things ironed out. We've got to make sure we're not turning the ball over."

Virginia Tech led 21-0 just seven seconds into the second quarter and cruised to its 11th victory in 14 all-time meetings with Temple (3-3, 0-2).

"I'll have to look at the film to figure it out, but I was surprised that offensively we didn't perform any better than we did," Temple coach Bobby Wallace said. "I give the Virginia Tech defense a lot of credit, they are obviously an outstanding group."

This game comes just 10 days short of the two-year anniversary of one of the biggest victories in Temple history. On October 17, 1998, the five-touchdown underdog Owls rallied from a 17-point deficit to defeat unbeaten and 10th-ranked Virginia Tech, 28-24.

Vick, the Hokies' sensational sophomore quarterback, was not around for that loss. Today, he completed 14-of-28 passes for 162 yards -- he was picked off twice -- while carrying 18 times for 55 yards.

"Michael needs to be himself and not make anything more than what it is and not make anything less than what it is," Beamer said. "He just needs to go and play and that's probably going to be enough."

Suggs and Andre Kendrick did the rest on the ground, combining for 106 yards and three touchdowns on 29 attempts, while the Hokies stifled the rushing attack of the Owls, holding them to minus-15 yards.

A sophomore, Suggs scored on touchdown runs of seven and two yards in a 7:10 span of the first quarter. Vick then hit Cullen Hawkins for a 41-yard score on the first play of the second period to make it 21-0.

Temple did not go quietly, however, fighting with a 21-14 as linebacker Chonn Lacey brought back one of Vick's interceptions 65 yards for a score at the end of the first half and Mike Frost hit Charles Cobb for a 26-yard score in the early moments after the break.

Frost replaced the ineffective Devin Scott and was 8-of-18 for 114 yards but was also intercepted three times. Scott completed 5-of-10 for a meager 17 yards.

Vick, however, scored on a five-yard TD run midway through the third quarter and Kendrick added a 14-yard TD 14 seconds into the final period.

"Michael Vick is a tremendous athlete," Wallace added. "You can't sit there and not see that. He gives them such a great dimension. He can explode for 10 yards in a heartbeat and get a first down."

Temple was just 1-of-14 on third down, compared to 7-of-16 by Virginia Tech.
