Game StoryORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- No longer entertaining national championship aspirations, Virginia Tech took out its frustrations on mistake-prone Central Florida.
Lee Suggs rushed for a career-high five touchdowns and set a Big East single-season scoring record as the eighth-ranked Hokies rebounded from last week's loss at Miami to defeat Central Florida, 44-21.
While Virginia Tech's national title hopes ended in last week's 42-21 setback at the Orange Bowl, the Hokies (9-1) still are in contention for one of two at-large bids in the Bowl Championship Series.
The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for Central Florida, which closed its season at 7-4.
Michael Vick missed his second straight contest with a badly sprained right ankle, but the Hokies relied on their defense, which forced six turnovers. Virginia Tech converted those into 35 points.
Suggs has scored 144 points on 24 touchdowns this season, shattering the previous Big East mark of 126, set by Boston College's Darnell Campbell in 1993.
Suggs also is rewriting the Virginia Tech record, setting school marks this year for points, rushing touchdowns and total touchdowns.
Dave Meyer got his second straight start in place of Vick but left with bruised ribs late in the third quarter, forcing Grant Noel, the Hokies' third string quarterback, to play the final 17 minutes.
Suggs, who rushed for 143 yards on 30 carries to go over the 1,000-yard mark, scored on three one-yard touchdowns in the first quarter, helping the Hokies build a 21-7 lead.
Carter Warley booted a 33-yard field goal and defensive end Nathaniel Adibi returned a fumble 36 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter, giving Virginia Tech a 30-7 halftime cushion.
Virginia Tech stretched its lead to 44-14 in the third period as Suggs reached the end zone on runs of 13 and four yards.
Meyer spent most of the evening handing off to his running backs, completing just 2-of-7 passes for 55 yards. Virginia Tech rushed 61 times for 313 yards.
Freshman Ryan Schneider completed 25-of-41 for 346 yards and three touchdowns for the Golden Knights, but threw four interceptions. Central Florida also could not get anything going on the ground, rushing for just 21 yards on 23 carries.
Schneider tossed TD passes of 24 yards to Tyson Hinshaw and 10 yards to Kenny Clark in the third quarter to make the final score respectable.
