Game Story

BLACKSBURG, Virginia (Ticker) -- With Michael Vick less than 100 percent, fifth-ranked Virginia Tech stated its case for a berth in the Bowl Championship Series with a convincing 42-21 triumph over Virginia.

Slowed by an ankle injury, Vick completed 16-of-23 passes for 202 yards and a touchdown as Virginia Tech (10-1) posted its second straight win since a 41-21 loss to second-ranked Miami. Vick, who sat out a series in the first quarter, rushed five times for 28 yards.

Lee Suggs picked up the slack, carrying 22 times for 116 yards and scoring three touchdowns for the Hokies.

"I'm really proud of this football team," Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer said. "To be 10-1 with all the injuries we've had, with the inexperience, I told them we have some tough football players, not just physically tough, but mentally tough. A lot of these players kept battling back, and that's the way we did it tonight."

Suggs broke several tackles and scored from 30 yards 2:58 into the second quarter to tie it at 14-14. It was was the first of 28 unanswered points for Virginia Tech.

"We have the best quarterback in the country and that tailback (Suggs) is not far behind that quarterback," Beamer said. "What he can do in a ballgame, his speed and his toughness, he's getting in a class of his own, too."

Antwoine Womack rushed 20 times for 134 yards and a TD for Virginia (6-5), which was trying to win seven games for the 14th straight season. The Cavaliers had won three of their previous four games at Virginia Tech but trail the all-time series, 36-41-5.

Ronyell Whitaker's 61-yard punt return set up Jarrett Ferguson's second touchdown of the game, a one-yard plunge that put Virginia Tech ahead, 21-14, with 6:31 left before halftime.

Special teams play also led to Virginia Tech's first score. Defensive tackle Chad Beasley recovered James Johnson's fumbled punt return on the Virginia 25. After Suggs ran twice for 12 yards, Jarrett Ferguson's 13-yard run forged a 7-7 tie.

"The kicking game hurt us," Virginia coach George Welsh said. "It helped turn it around. The fumbled punt, then their punt return -- those two things made a big difference. Then our offense went to sleep after that, so we're not going to win. You can't stop them if you can't score."

Vick directed a 10-play, 80-yard drive that he capped with a 23-yard pass to Suggs to put the Hokies ahead 28-14 with 19 seconds left in the first half.

On its first possession of the third quarter, Virginia Tech marched 64 yards in eight plays, with Suggs' three-yard run pushing the lead to 35-14. He had a six-yard scamper two minutes into the fourth quarter for his 30th career TD, tying James Barber's school record.

Tyree Foreman, whose seven-yard run gave Virginia the early lead, burst up the middle for an 11-yard TD that cut the deficit to 35-21 with 68 seconds left in the third.

Virginia grabbed a 14-7 lead on Womack's 24-yard run with 5:41 left in the opening period.
