Game Story

BLACKSBURG, Virginia (Ticker) -- Andre Davis did things in groups of three, assuring there would be no need for another miracle finish by Virginia Tech.

Davis scored touchdowns three different ways in the third quarter as the second-ranked Hokies awoke for a 48-20 victory over West Virginia in the Big East Conference.

Virginia Tech (6-0, 4-0 Big East) trailed by seven points at halftime before exploding for 27 points in the third quarter to win its 17th straight regular season game.

Davis scored on a 30-yard run, caught a 64-yard touchdown pass from Michael Vick and returned a punt 76 yards for another TD, all in a six-minute, 36-second span of the third period.

"Andre Davis is a weapon," Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer said. "He's got great quickness and speed. He gets his hands on the ball and runs without any worry about himself."

Heisman Trophy candidate Vick accounted for 290 yards and threw a pair of TD passes for Virginia Tech, which collected 504 total yards and remained one of seven unbeaten teams in Division I-A.

It was a third quarter of big plays for the Hokies, who tied the game at 14-14 on a 72-yard touchdown pass from Vick to Bob Slowikowski. Vick found the tight end over the middle at midfield and Slowikowski broke a tackle before racing to the end zone.

Then Davis took over with his three scores, capped by the dazzling punt return up the right sideline for a 34-14 lead after three quarters. It was the third time this season he returned a punt for a score.

Davis caught six passes for 127 yards.

"It's the same old story, when you've got that kind of speed out there, you know some place along the line it's going to erupt and get you," West Virginia coach Don Nehlen said of Davis.

Virginia Tech made several mistakes in the first half, keeping the game close and invoking memories of last season, when the Hokies needed a last-second field goal to defeat the Mountaineers and keep their national title hopes alive.

The Hokies lost to Florida State in the national championship game, but are in the running again this season.

West Virginia (4-2, 2-2) allowed a season high in points, one more than in a loss to Miami.

Vick carried 11 times for 57 yards and completed 10-of-18 passes for 233 yards. He had a 29-yard run on Virginia Tech's opening drive, setting up a two-yard TD run by Lee Suggs.

"It's amazing how long (Vick) can throw that ball and drop it in their hands," Nehlen said. "He can throw it 50 or 60 yards."

Virginia Tech controlled play for most of the first quarter, but failed to capitalize on several opportunities.

The Hokies continued their special-teams success with a blocked punt in the first quarter, the 81st blocked kick in 156 games under Beamer. But the Hokies came away with nothing when Vick fumbled out of the end zone for a touchback.

"Generally, when you miss as many opportunities as we did in the first half and a team has that type of momentum and is that well coached, it is cause for concern," Beamer said. "I just can't say enough about the way our team responded in the second half. We looked adversity in the eye and I thought we played the best half of football we have in a long time."

Virginia Tech wasted yet another chance when Suggs was stopped short of a first down on 4th-and-1 at the Mountaineer 2.

A rare special teams mistake enabled West Virginia to tie the game early in the second quarter. Davis fumbled a punt that was recovered by West Virginia at the Virginia Tech 33. Several plays later, Avon Cobourne scored on a seven-yard run.

The Mountaineers took a 14-7 lead on a four-yard TD pass from Brad Lewis to tight end Sean Berton with 58 seconds left in the half. The drive was kept alive by a penalty for roughing the punter. Lewis completed 14-of-29 passes for 161 yards.

Virginia Tech added two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter on runs of 16 yards by Jarrett Ferguson and two yards by Andre Kendrick.

West Virginia cornerback Ben Meighan returned a fumble 36 yards for a touchdown with 2:20 left to complete the scoring.
