Blacksburg, VA - Playing their first and only night home game of the season, the Hokies got up on Boston College 34-0 and then coasted down the stretch to a 34-20 Big East win before a capacity crowd of 53,662.

Tech quarterback Grant Noel led the charge, completing 16 of 28 passes for 225 yards, 2 TD's (both to Andre Davis), and one interception. Tailback Keith Burnell recorded his second straight 100-yard rushing game, carrying the ball 19 times for 111 yards. Backup tailback Kevin Jones added 60 yards on 17 carries. The Hokies were led in receiving by Davis, who had 112 yards on 6 catches, with two touchdowns.

The Hokie defense, despite giving up the last 20 points of the game, had a solid outing. They held BC to just 2 yards on their first 6 possessions and gave up only 58 yards rushing. Boston College tailback William Green, the Big East's leading rusher and the #5 rusher in the NCAA coming in, had 74 yards on 21 carries. Boston College had 238 total yards.

Defensively, the Hokies were led by rover Kevin McCadam, who returned a fumble 9 yards for a TD, and linebacker Ben Taylor, who had 8 tackles to once again lead the Hokies in that department. Defensive tackle David Pugh had Tech's only two sacks of the game.

Virginia Tech put this one away just ten minutes into the game, scoring 21 points in the first 9:13 to put the Eagles in a hole from which they couldn't recover. The Hokies scored on their first possession, going 76 yards in 6 plays, culminating in a nicely thrown 37-yard TD pass from Grant Noel to Andre Davis. After a three-and-out by Boston College, the Hokies went 59 plays in 5 yards, with Noel finishing it off with a 1-yard TD run on an option keeper that made it 14-0 with 7:56 to go in the first quarter.

After the two teams traded possessions, Tech defensive end Jim Davis broke through on a first and ten from the 20 for Boston College and batted down an option pitch. Tech rover Kevin McCadam picked the ball up at the Boston College 9 yard line and ran it into the end zone for his second defensive touchdown of the year, making it 21-0, Hokies.

After another Boston College three-and-out, the Hokies drove down to the BC 2 yard line but had to settle for a 19-yard field goal after Noel missed an open Jarrett Ferguson on third and goal from the two. The field goal made it 24-0, where it stood until half time.

The Hokies added another touchdown in the third quarter when Noel threw a short slant route to Davis that the speedy wide receiver broke down the middle and turned into a 34-yard touchdown to make it 31-0, Tech. Warley tacked on a 39-yard field goal to make it 34-0 Tech with 6:04 to go third quarter.

From that point on, some timely plays by Boston College in the passing game, plus some defensive breakdowns on the part of the Hokies, led to three straight Boston College scores. BC's first touchdown came on an 8-yard run by Green with 3:57 to go in the third quarter. Green's run followed a perfectly executed 35-yard pass to the Tech 8-yard line from St. Pierre to Ryan Read.

Boston College scored again midway through the 4th quarter. With the Hokies driving deep in BC territory, Noel threw an interception under pressure to Boston College defensive lineman Antonio Garay, who returned it from the BC 20 to the Tech 31. The Eagles scored two plays later when St. Pierre went deep to Jamal Burke. Burke came close to being called for offensive interference on the play when he pushed off on Tech cornerback Eric Green, but no flag was thrown, and after BC missed the extra point, it was 34-13, Hokies.

Boston College added another garbage time touchdown with just 9 seconds to go when St. Pierre hit Burke for another touchdown, this one an 11-yarder. The scoring play came at the end of a 6-play 39-yard BC drive following an interception by Tech's backup QB, Bryan Randall.

The Hokies had 396 yards total offense to BC's 238 yards. Tech controlled the football throughout the game, accumulating almost 38 minutes of possession time.

With the victory, Tech has now won six straight over Boston College, dating back to a 45-7 win in Chestnut Hill in 1996. Boston College's last victory over Tech was coincidentally Tech's last loss in a home night game, 20-14 in 1995.

The Hokies are now 6-0 on the year, 3-0 Big East. Boston College falls to 4-2, 2-1 Big East. The Hokies will be idle on October 20th before facing Syracuse at home on October 27th at noon.
