Beerman's Picks O' the Week
(for Thursday, 11/19, and Saturday, 11/21)
by Beerman - posted 11/19/98Last
week: Just lousy all around. Tech lost, my picks went a mediocre 11-11, the Skins
screwed up their quest for the top availiable draft pick, and 2 of my 3 fantasy football
teams lost.
This week: Jacksonville or bust !
Not in action this week: #7 Texas A&M, #8 Arizona, #18 Wahoo State, #19
Nebraska
Top 25 Games
Thursday Night Game:
#22 MIAMI (FL) (-22) vs. Pittsburgh
Last year UPitt upset Miami on a Thursday night. Canes are back in the drivers seat for
the Big East title, and won't screw this one up.
I can't decide, however, who I'd rather have representing the Big East in the Orange
Bowl. I like Syracuse better, (or should I say, dislike them less) but I think Miami would
have a better chance against FSU. Quite the quandry ...
Pick: Canes
Saturday Games:
#1 Kansas State (-12.5) @ # 23 MISSOURI
Wait until you hear the screaming when KSU finishes the season ranked #1 in both
opinion polls ... and only #3 in the BCS poll.
Pick: Kansas State
#2 TENNESSEE (-11.5) vs. #25 Kentucky
By all rights, the Vols should have lost to Arkansas. If they're not careful, Tim Couch
and Co. could pull the upset here. Watch for a shootout if UT can't come up with something
to control the UK offensive attack.
Pick: Kentucky
#3 UCLA (-6.5) vs. Southern Cal
This is a rivalry game, that means UCLA won't be overlooking a pretty good Trojans
squad. Poor USC. By the same token, a pumped-up USC team is more than capable of pulling
the upset here.
Pick: UCLA
#4 Florida (+2.5) @ #5 FLORIDA STATE
FSU down to their #3 QB now. Outzen (sp?) was never expected to play this much in his
entire career, and it showed against Weak Forest last week. I'm a little suprised that FSU
is the favorite here, even with the game at Doak. I'd make this my upset pick, but I have
qualms with calling a top-5 team's victory an "upset" no matter whom it is
against.
Pick: Florida
#6 OHIO STATE (-9.5) vs. #11 Michigan
The "Big Game" is upon us. I'm not suprised that OSU is favored, but I'm very
suprised at the size of the spread. Michigan is playing _well_ lately, and should cover
this one with ease. John Cooper already fell out of the MNC race, and if OSU loses to
Michigan, you're going to to hear lots of Buckeye's calling for his head. We should be
that spoiled !
Pick: Michigan
#9 Arkansas (-3.5) @ MISSISSIPPI STATE
If the Hogs have a let down after last week's disappointing loss, they might not get a
chance at a rematch in the SEC title game. MSU is right on their tail, and a fully capable
of the upset here.
Pick: MSU
#10 NOTRE DAME (-3) vs. Louisiana State
We're bitching because we dropped a couple we should have won. LSU is 4-5 in a year
where they were picked preseason top-10 ... ouch ! This is the first team with any speed
that UNBC has faced in a while, however, and if they are not prepared things could get
interesting.
#12 WISCONSIN (even) vs. #14 Penn State
Last week Wisconsin was exposed as the pretender. I told you so. Now the Nittany Lions
get to have their turn.
Pick: Nits
#13 TULANE (-15.5) vs. Houston
Houston just got beat by the worst defensive team in all of major college football.
Tulane still has a (very) outside shot at landing a Sugar Bowl at-large berth.
Pick: Tulane
#15 GEORGIA (-12) vs. Mississippi
There are already 8 SEC teams eligible for bowls. If Mississippi doesn't start winning
again soon, they might be stuck at home for the holidays.
Pick: Georgia
#16 Oregon (-9.5) @ OREGON STATE
Oregon State is _not_ last in the Pac Ten this year. That's cause for great rejoicing
in Corvalis. They will, however, be last in the State of Oregon.
Pick: Ducks
#17 AIR FORCE (-19) vs. Rice
This is AFA's closer. Watch them walk all over the "other" Owls on their way
to a berth in the last annual WAC title game.
Pick: AFA
#20 VIRGINIA TECH (-27) vs. Rutgers
I'm not so sure our offense could score 27 points right now. Good thing the defense can
!
Pick: Rutgers (cover only)
#21 GEORGIA TECH (-16) vs. Weak Forest
This is our opponent in the Gator Bowl, ladies and gentlemen, say "hi" to the
Ramblin Wreck !
Pick: Georgia Tech
#24 Syracuse (-27.5) @ TEMPLE
If the Orangemen don't beat Miami next week, don't be suprised if they get a lower bowl
than us. Fickle fans don't travel.
Pick: Syracuse
Other Things To Look For:
Game of the Week to Watch: Florida at
Florida State or OSU-Michigan ... take your pick.
Upset Special: Mississippi State over Arkansas
Last week: 11 - 11
Season to Date: 119 - 104 - 3
Upset Special: 2 - 9 |
