Beerman's Picks O' the Week
(for Saturday, 10/17)
by Beerman - posted 10/16/98

Each week this season, I will be posting a column previewing the upcoming weekend's Big East and Top-25 matchups. All rankings are from the ESPN/Coaches Poll. Picks are against the spread, and are for entertainment purposes only

Last week: The real Nebraska stepped forward ... and got kicked in the teeth. 8-10-1...not particularly good. Glad I don't actually put money on these games!

Not in action this week: #4 Tennessee, #15 West Virginia, #20 UNBC

Top 25 Games

#1 OHIO STATE (-37.5) vs. Minnesota

Gopher...the other white meat!

Pick: Ohio State

#2 UCLA (-10.5) vs. #12 Oregon

Oregon has looked very good to this point. UCLA passed their first test with flying colors when they pasted a good Arizona squad last weekend. Zona didn't have half the offensive talent that the Ducks posses. This game could look like one of those late-80's SDSU/BYU games.

Pick: UCLA

#3 KANSAS STATE (-21) vs. Oklahoma State

Well well well ... seems that high-powered KSU attack doesn't do so well when put up against a real I-A opponent. As Nebraska can testify to, Okie State has a pretty fair defense themselves. KSU should win this one, but I think 21 points might be a bit extreme.

Pick: Oklahoma State

#5 FLORIDA (-20) vs. Auburn

Lose here, and Terry's outta da family!

Pick: Florida

#6 Wahoo State (-2.5) @ #25 GEORGIA TECH

With a loss here, Cavaliers likely headed for a 5-6 season.

Pick: Georgia Tech

#7 FLORIDA STATE (-28.5) vs. Clemson

Looks like the Tommy West farewell tour is headed through Tallahassee this week. This one could get ugly folks.

Pick: F$U

#8 NEBRASKA (-34.5) vs. Kansas

Ever been around a 6'5" 290lb guy with a bad hangover? Poor Kansas is about to meet up with about 150 of 'em.

Pick: UNL

#9 WISCONSIN (-20.5) vs. Illinois

Wisconsin handled Purdue. That impressed me. Not enough to justify their #9 ranking in my mind...but not bad. That great sucking sound you hear is the black hole of college football that Champaign, IL has become.

Pick: Badgers

#10 VIRGINIA TECH (-35.5) vs. Temple

Predicted final score - Hokies: 41 Owls: 3

Pick: VT

#11 PENN STATE (-8.5) vs. Purdue

I'm tempted to make this my upset pick. Purdue is a good team, and Penn State looked to be feeling residual effects from the OSU thrashing last week against Minnesota. I just can't do it tho...not with the game in Happy Valley.

Pick: PSU

#13 Texas A&M (-6.5) @ BAYLOR

Baylor already caught one team napping after an upset this year. Can they do it again?

Pick: aTm

#14 GEORGIA (-28) vs. Vanderbilt

All you Michael Vick disciples out there, take note of last week's Georgia-Tennessee game. This is why you don't start true freshmen at quarterback.

The Commodores are the Washington Redskins of the college football world. They can't play defense, but they make up for it by not being able to score !

Pick: Georgia

#16 Arkansas ( -7) @ SOUTH CAROLINA

Go figure. They play in the SEC, yet somehow Arkansas has managed to pull a schedule with only 2 top-25 teams on it for the entire season. No matter, even if they win the SEC West, they'll get waxed by whomever they face in the SEC title game.

Pick: Hogs

#17 Arizona (-8.5) @ OREGON STATE

Oregon St. actually won a Pac-10 game last weekend. Take a moment and ponder that thought...

Pick: Arizona

#18 COLORADO (-5.5) vs. #23 Texas Tech

Colorado is still a fraud. Texas Tech head coach Spike Dykes is a perfect example of everything you don't want in a college football coach. What a useless game...maybe if I make it my upset special, I'll actually care about the outcome.

OK ... done

Nope, still don't care.

Pick: Texas Tech

#19 MISSOURI (-16.5) vs. Oklahoma

There was a time when the Texas-Oklahoma game meant big things for the national scene. All it did this year was provide game film for the Missouri coaching staff to study.

Pick: Mizzou

#21 LOUISIANA STATE (-10) vs. Kentucky

I thought after seeing the LSU players walk out in those bright yellow uniforms last week, that the Gators would be too busy laughing to actually play the game. Apparently not...

In any case, LSU's season is falling apart faster than the Russian economy. If UK can bring some defense, they could put the final nail in the Tigers' coffin.

Pick: Kentucky

#22 Syracuse (-13) at BOSTON COLLEGE

Louiseville is a bad team with a good quarterback, and they shredded the BC secondary two weeks ago. Syracuse is considerably better than Louiseville can even aspire to be.

Pick: Big Orange

#24 TULANE (-16.5) vs. Louiseville

Oh yeah, Conference USA. That's right, I'd almost forgotten about them. Turns out Tulane's got a pretty good team. That should last just about long enough for Tommy Bowden to get a job offer from a real school. When I say "real school", I of course mean "South Carolina school".

Pick: Tulane

Other Big East Games

PITTSBURGH (-21.5) vs. RUTSgers

It's the Big East Game of the Week folks! That sound you hear is the simultaneous clicking of millions of television sets changing stations. The Big East has a top-10 power in Virginia Tech, and yet someone has decided that there will be a bigger audience for this classic matchup. Anyone out there understand this?

...and somewhere off in the distance, a lone trained goose could be heard softly honking...

Pick: UPitt

Other Things To Look For:

Game of The Week to Watch: UCLA vs. Oregon

Upset Special: Geez ... so many to choose from. Purdue over PSU ? Nah ... GA Tech over Wahoo State ? Hoping it doesn't happen ... So we'll go with Texas Tech over Colorado.

Last week: 8 - 10 - 1

Season to Date: 61 - 57 - 3

Upset Special: 1 - 5
