BEERMAN'S PICKS FOR WEEK 5
By Beerman
- posted 9/23/99Each week this season, I will be posting a column previewing the
upcoming weekend's Big East and Top-25 match-ups. All rankings are from the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. Picks
are against the spread, and are
for entertainment purposes only
Last Week: This is why I don't bet real money on football. 4-19 is not a
good week for the Beerman. As bad a weekend as it was for the Big East, we can take solace
in the fact that it was even worse for the PAC-10. USC and Oregon State are the only
undefeated P-10 teams left, and they both scraped by inferior competition over the weekend
who's putting the dog in the BcS this year?
This week: Vick gets introduced to the country on ESPN primetime. And if you've
ever wondered about the validity of a preseason poll, think about how it only took four
games for the pollsters to realize that they were wrong about Notre Dame and Arizona.
Not in action: #12 Georgia Tech
THURSDAY 9/23
Top-25 Games:
#8 VIRGINIA
TECH (-12.5) vs. Clemson
Bowden Schmowden. Is Clemson improved from last year? Yes.
Will we beat them by a score of 37-0 again? No. Will we go into the tank on National TV?
No. We're going to win this one, and we're going to win it rather handily. Clemson will
score some points, but no more than 20
and that's me being generous.
#8 and rising
go Hokies!!
Pick: Virginia Tech
SATURDAY 9/25
Top-25 Games:
#1 Florida
State (-19) @ NORTH CAROLINA
FSU was one of the few teams that I picked correctly last
week. That makes me happy. North Carolina (in general) does not make me happy. Even at
Chapel Hill, FSU should be able to pretty much name their score in this one. Torbush will
not be long lived as a head coach.
Pick: F$U
#3 PENN
STATE (-26) vs. Indiana
And yet another team is the beneficiary of a questionable
coaching decision made by Butch Davis. Typical! Indiana can score lots of points. They can
also give up lots of points. I think we all know how this one should end up. The only
thing is, I don't like 26 point spreads over teams with good firepower.
Pick: Indiana
#3 Florida
(-20) @ KENTUCKY
Florida's defense stepped up in a big way against
Tennessee. They'll have to do it again against a Couchless Kentucky team which is still
very capable of lighting up the scoreboard. They will
Pick: Florida
#4 Michigan
(-3) @ #17 WISCONSIN
So Ron Dayne rushes for 200+ yards, and the Badgers still
lose to woeful Cincinnati. The same Cincinnati team that just came off a loss to I-AA Troy
State the week before. Technically, it was not a bigger upset than Temple last year
but it was mighty close. Michigan looked mortal against Syracuse, and was lucky that the
refs stayed paid off like they should have. Wisconsin will be angry this week.
Barry Alvarez doesn't always have the best talent to work with, but he is an
excellent motivator. There could be an upset this week in Madison
Pick: Wisconsin
#5 Nebraska
(-17) @ MISSOURI
Don't be fooled by last week's game. Southern Mississippi
has been giving top-25 teams fits for years. They usually don't win, but they almost
always come closer than most expect. Having said that, Nebraska is experiencing some real
problems on the offensive side of the ball. They'll have to fix that before they get to
the meat of their Big Twelve schedule. Missouri, however, is not the meat
more like
the salad.
Pick: Nebraska
#6 TEXAS
A&M (-11) vs. Southern Mississippi
Remember what I just said about Southern Mississippi? Well,
I'm going to go against it. Not a knock on Southern Miss, but aTm has played them in each
of the past two years, once in Hattiesburg. The Aggies know what to expect, and will not
be taken by surprise. Therefore, they will cover.
Pick: Texas A&M
#7 TENNESSEE
(-30) @ Memphis
It's not going to be a whole lot of fun to be a Tiger next
Saturday.
Pick: Tennessee
#9 GEORGIA
(-28) vs. Central Florida
Doobie doobie doo
Drink Bud Ice, but beware of the
penguin.
Pick: Georgia
#10 OHIO
STATE (-32) vs. Cincinnati
Ohio State to show Bearcats what real Big Ten
football is all about.
Pick: OSU
#11 PURDUE
(-27) vs. Northwestern
One time only, exact final score prediction. Purdue: 63,
Northwestern: 6
Pick: Purdue
#13 Miami
(FL) (-9) @ EAST CAROLINA
Boy, talk about a good way to destroy your kicker's
confidence! I understand Butch was just trying to protect Crossland from LaVar Arrington,
but still
it was a pretty dumb move. Things like that are why Miami is not
"back" quite yet. East Carolina is 3-0, and could be the 3rd best
team in the Big East this year. No matter, if this game even is played, Miami takes it.
Pick: Miami
#14 Arkansas
(off) @ ALABAMA
Oops! Young teams with talent can do great things. They can
also lose to Louisiana Tech. I'm not sure why there's no line, probably an injury to
someone or another. Arkansas wins this, but not by much.
Pick: Arkansas
#15 Kansas
State (-16) @ IOWA STATE
Iowa State has quietly gone 3-0 to start the season. That's
3-0 over Indiana State (I-AA), Iowa, and UNLV. Now, they get to play a real team.
Pick: Kansas State
#16 Southern
Cal (pick 'em) @ OREGON
PAC-10 Presidents are holding a special meeting this week
to discuss the possibility of asking Oregon to roll over and play dead for the good of the
entire conference. If Oregon wins this one (at home, a very real possibility), then the
PAC-10 is done on the national scene for 1999.
Pick: Oregon
#18 UCLA
(-1) @ STANFORD
OK, Arizona just plain sucks this year. Whatever confidence
they had as a preseason top-5 team is absolutely shattered. The fact that Stanford beat
them really doesn't mean much, and I don't understand why UCLA is only a 1-point favorite.
Sure, they've got some starters suspended, and a couple of injuries, but they're a much
better team (or should be, at least) than is the Stanford Cardinal.
Pick: UCLA
#19 BRIGHAM
YOUNG (-6) vs. Virginia
With a loss here, Virginia likely headed for a 2-9 season.
Pick: Cougs
#20 Texas
(-16) @ BAYLOR
Baylor is the soft underbelly of the Big Twelve schedule.
As a matter of fact, about the only conference that Baylor could reasonably have a chance
of winning in is the Big West. I worry about Texas, however, as they don't appear to be
very consistent from week to week.
Pick: Texas
#21 Michigan
State (-7) @ ILLINOIS
MSU is playing some really good football early. Illinois is
a surprising 3-0 as well, pulling a bit of an upset over Louiseville last weekend. On of
these teams is for real, and I'm guessing that they wear green. On the other hand,
Michigan State has an almost Syracuse-like ability to blow 2-3 games each year that they
shouldn't. Difficult team to pick
Pick: Michigan State
#22 MARSHALL
(-28) vs. Temple
Temple scored their first points of the year (3rd game) against Akron.
The mighty Zips scored even more, however, and Temple is now battling it out with Buffalo
for the title of National CHUMPion.
Pick: Marshall
#23 MISSISSIPPI
STATE (-12) vs. South Carolina
One of these days, South Carolina will score a
touchdown. I just don't know when that will be. Lou Holtz looks older and older every
week.
Pick: Mississippi State
#24 N.C. State
(-5.5) @ WAKE
FOREST
Due to upheaval in the top-25, NC State somehow managed to
get whipped and still maintain a spot in the rankings. Go figure. Weak Forest put on a
typical Demon Deacon performance against Virginia, and will likely lay another egg this
week. Gosh
isn't ACC football exciting!
Pick: NCSU
#25 AIR
FORCE (-9) vs. Wyoming
Air Force is 2nd in the nation in rushing
offense, 14th in total offense, and average 34 points per game while only
giving up 17. This is a pretty good team folks, and getting the shaft from the polls again.
Wyoming is a pretty good offensive club, but won't have control of the ball often enough
to score very many points. The Mountain West moves up in the polls against this week.
Pick: Air Force
Other Big East Games:
SYRACUSE
(-11.5) vs. West
Virginia
33-0
ummm, what?!? I can understand Maryland pulling off an upset. That happens.
That's what makes college football exciting. But 33-0? Are you kidding me? If WVU couldn't
handle the relative quiet of Byrd Stadium, they're going to have big problems with the
Jiffy-Pop Dome.
Pick: Syracuse
Boston College
(-5) vs. RUTGERS
One of these two teams will likely end up fourth in the Big East, and go to a bowl
game. It's a sad day in the Big East when a BC/RUTSgers match-up is this pivotal for the
post-season. Boston College has squeaked by a couple of less-than-national powers, but
they've won. Rutgers has lost to Cal and to Texas, but not by the gross margins that they
would have just a couple short years ago. I can see the Scarlet Knights pulling this one
out.
Pick: Rutgers
Game of the Week to Watch: Not much exciting
out there. Michigan-Wisconsin is the only match-up of top-25 teams, so that's my pick.
Upset Special: Wisconsin over Michigan
Last Week: 4-19
Season to Date: 32-40
Upset Special: 1-3
