New Format for Hokie Central

As you can tell, I've reworked the format of Hokie Central a little bit, not out of necessity, but out of a desire to mix things up a little bit. Check out the new format, and let me know what you think of it.

I kind of like it, and I'll probably be tweaking and tuning it in the coming days and months. So far, I've only looked at it on Netscape 3.0 at 800 X 600 resolution, so I hope it looks okay on your browser.

On the main page, you should see "Welcome to..." and on the next line, you should see a VT, "Hokie Central," and another VT, all on the same line. Hopefully, on 640 X 480 browsers, it won't put the second VT on the next line. Let me know if it does.

The middle of the front page is a three column table. In the left-hand column, you've got a maroon bar with three Hokie birds on it (the only thing better than one Hokie bird is three). In the middle are the various links (News and Notes, Games, etc.) and their update information. In the right-hand column are Big East, football helmet, A-10, and NIT logos (that's right, I'm still hanging on to the glory of the NIT victory).

So give me feedback. Is it harder to use, is it easier to use? What can I do to improve it?

Xavier Crushes Hokie Hoops Team

When you make 9 of your first 10 shots, and you're still losing, that's a bad sign.

That's what happened to the basketball team on Saturday night on the road at Xavier. The Musketeers turned out 10,000 fired up fans, and although Tech started out hot, Xavier took control in about the middle of the first half and took revenge for three straight losses to the Hokies, winning 102-67.

The game was marred by a half-hour delay in the first half as crews wiped up condensation from the floor of Xavier's arena, which has an ice rink underneath it. The chill from the ice caused moisture to gather on the floor, and officials took care of the problem by turning off the freon that runs underneath the ice. The ice warmed up, they wiped off the floor, and the game went on.

Xavier is good, folks. Much better than Tech. It was a butt-whipping, yes, but Xavier is now 10-0, including a road win at Cincinnati, so it's nothing to be embarrassed about.

Hokies Land Another Player from PA

Matt Wincek, a 6-foot-6, 270-pound lineman, became the third football player from the third different school in the Wyoming Valley (Pa.) Conference to commit to Virginia Tech. Wincek, from Coughlin High School in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., joins rivals Barney Bowman from Berwick and Jim Ferugio from Pottsville as future Hokies.

I like the kid's size a lot. Mike Gentry should be able to work wonders with that. Wincek has a 3.2 grade-point average and scored 1090 on the SAT, so eligibility won't be a problem. Wincek, who made all-state second team on defense, was offered scholarships by North Carolina State and Mississippi State, and had scheduled visits to Syracuse and Maryland. He played both ways, so it's tough to say where the Hokies will use him, but I'm betting offensive line.
