Monday, July 13, 1998 As summertime continues to plod on towards football season, there is very little going on in the way of hard Tech sports news, but here are a few tidbits of general interest, plus an update on Tech football coverage. It's a Done Deal: Clemson Won't be on TV It's not completely official yet, but in an article that Jack Bogaczyk wrote in Saturday's Roanoke Times, he says that the word is out that Tech and Clemson will not be shown on TV this year - a disappointment, since part of the reason Mr. Weaver signed the Tigers up to a home-and-home was the hope that the games would land on TV. In the article, titled Blacked out: Va. Tech-Clemson football game not on TV, Jack also talks about what a hard sell the Big East package is, and the fact that as of this date, no local (to Roanoke) TV station has signed up for the Big East broadcasts. But why should they, when all they'll get is a steady diet of Rutgers and Temple games? Under the league's TV contract, CBS, ESPN, and ESPN2 get first dibs on what games to broadcast, and after they're done picking (or not picking, as the case may be), that always seems to leave nothing but games involving Big East doormats Temple and Rutgers for the league's broadcasts. Gone are the days when tilts such as Tech/Miami might make the Big East slate (as they did in 1995), or Tech/Syracuse (1993). In an eight-team league, with three other networks picking first, it's no surprise that all that's left over is the kitty litter of the league, matchup-wise. Anyway, it's a good, informative article, so be sure to click on the link above and check it out. In the article, Jack verifies the times and TV listings that I have shown on my home page, including the fact that the WVU and Syracuse games have not been spoken for and could be picked by CBS or ESPN/ESPN2 later this season (and if not, they'll sure as heck wind up on the Big East broadcasts).
No, he's not the subject of the Biography, but Virginia Tech history professor Glenn Bugh was quoted a couple of times the other night on an A&E Biography show. The subject of the Biography was the mad Roman emperor Caligula, and during the show, A&E had quotes from three experts on the emperor. One of the experts was a woman from the University of Cincinnati, who received about 90% of the air time, but one of the other two experts was Bugh, who appeared on camera twice. And I've got to hand it to A&E - they listed him as "Glenn Bugh, Virginia Tech," not "Glenn Bugh, Virginia Polytechnic Institute," or even worse, "Glenn Bugh, Virginia Polytechnic." If it was you, Dr. Bugh (assuming you're a Dr.), who made them get it right, then bless you. |
