Hokie Pride Day: Friday, August 25th, 2000

"The Hokie Spirit"

What sets Hokie fans apart and above all others???

Pride and enthusiasm…

Visit Blacksburg on game day in the fall, or go to any road or bowl game, and you’ll see why Tech fans are the envy of college football… certainly those in Charlottesville.

Consider:

… Record crowds of Hokies travelling to the last five bowl games… and always well represented by a sea of maroon in the end zone of away games.

… Back to back ESPN GameDay record crowds some eight hours prior to game time. GameDay has never been to any school location more than once… except Blacksburg… and next weekend, GameDay comes to B-Burg for the third time in its last eight stops!!!

...or the 2000 Sugar Bowl National Championship:

Almost twenty minutes after the game, some 30,000 Hokie fans remained in the stands cheering "Let’s Go… Hokies"… as the team slowly walked off the field toward the locker room after shaking hands with the ‘Noles.

ABC had just finished the presentation of the national championship trophy and most ‘Nole fans didn’t know quite what to make of it. They had just won the national championship, and they were still being shouted down by the fans of the "vanquished".

The "Hokie Spirit"… unbreakable!!!

Hokie Pride Day

In celebration of the "Hokie Spirit", The Roanoke Valley Hokie Club and the Roanoke Chapter of the Virginia Tech Alumni Association is organizing and sponsoring "Hokie Pride Day" in the Roanoke Valley on Friday, August 25th, 2000.

The goal of this event is simply to promote pride and enthusiasm for Virginia Tech and the nationally ranked Hokie football team in the Roanoke Valley. The primary objective of "Hokie Pride Day" will be to encourage Roanokers to "wear their maroon" on that day as a show of support for Virginia Tech.

Each of the local municipalities (Roanoke City, Roanoke County, City of Salem, and the Town of Vinton) have issued proclamations declaring "Hokie Pride Day" in their jurisdictions.

Local businesses have also been encouraged to participate and support this effort by:

  • Having a "Hokie Pride Casual Day" or a even a casual day where employees may wear their Hokie Maroon.
  • Displaying messages of support on roadside signs/ billboards/ marquee signs on this day… i.e. "Go Hokies"… or be creative!!! Our goal is to have every major artery of Roanoke lined with marquees in support of the Hokies. Flags and other decorations will not be discouraged.
  • Provide incentives for Hokies to visit their business (wearing their Hokie Maroon, of course) such as discount coupons, promotional pricing, etc… a restaurant featuring a "Hokie Special". qualify.

… over 100 merchants have agreed to participate, representing 99% of those asked. Are the Hokies "Hot" or what???

If you would like more information, on "Hokie Pride Day", contact Randy Woodson at (540) 342-2265 or [email protected] or Rick Harman at (540) 345-9780 or [email protected]

"Wear your maroon!!!"
