News With Commentary by TSL Staff Monday, June 4, 2001 Golf Team Finishes 8th The Virginia Tech golf team wrapped up a stellar season by finishing 8th in the NCAA Championships, 9 places above their 17th-seeded status entering the tournament. Virginia Tech became the first Big East team to advance past regional play. The Hokies' 8th place finish was their best since regional play began and their second best in school history. Tech placed 6th in the 1967 NCAA Championship. Tech was led by sophomore Brendon de Jonge, who had an even-par 288 and finished tied for 22nd out of 155 golfers. After carding scores of 72, 71, and 70 in the first three rounds, de Jonge had a 75 on the final day. Here is the breakdown on how the five Hokie golfers did:
Arizona led the first two days, but the University of Florida blew away the rest of the field with 3rd and 4th round scores of 277 and 275 to finish 18 strokes ahead of #2 Clemson. Arizona fell to third overall. Here's the final team scoring:
The future looks bright for Virginia Tech. All five golfers who competed in the NCAA's will return next year. Stinnett is a freshman, McKeel and de Jonge are sophomores, and Krusoe and Wagner are juniors. Kristin Price Finishes 10th in 5,000 Meters at NCAA's Tech's Kristin Price finished 10th place in the 5,000-meter run at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships Eugene, Oregon. Price ran her second-fastest 5,000 ever, posting a 16:11.60. Only the top eight runners score points, and Price finished just three seconds out of the top scoring top eight. The winning time was 15:52.21 by Stanford's Lauren Fleshman. The race marks the end of the Price's stellar indoor and outdoor track seasons, in which she set seven school records and earned All-America honors during the indoor season. She is only a freshman. Corey Moore Shot in Leg Former VT star defensive end Corey Moore was shot in the leg in his hometown of Brownsville, Tennessee early Saturday morning between 2:30 and 3:00 a.m. Moore was stopped at an intersection in his Ford Expedition when an assailant walked up to the car and shot him. Moore drove to Methodist Haywood Park Hospital, where he was treated and released. A spokesman for Methodist Haywood Park Hospital said Moore was told the injury was not life-threatening and the bullet did not need to be removed. The Jackson (TN) Sun reported Moore was arrested recently in Haywood County and charged with aggravated assault. He was allegedly involved in a May 15 incident in which a man was hit with a beer bottle. Moore was released on bond. |
