DT Carlton Powell Verbals to Virginia Tech
by Chris Horne

Virginia Tech added another impressive prospect to the defensive line mix today, when 6-4, 280-pound Carlton Powell verbally committed to the Hokies. Powell, who attends Great Bridge High School in Chesapeake, VA, had been leaning to the Hokies for a long time before finally making his decision.

"I committed to Virginia Tech last night," said Powell. "I was already leaning that way. I have been there about three or four times, and I just thought it was the right time."

While Virginia Tech’s success on the gridiron certainly had a positive effect, several other factors heavily influenced the talented defensive lineman’s decision.

"I’m interested in majoring in computer technology, so the academics were a good fit," said Powell. "Plus I like the coaches and the atmosphere."

Projected as a defensive tackle for Virginia Tech, Powell played linebacker for Great Bridge his sophomore and junior seasons. This year, he was moved to defensive tackle – a move that has been quite an adjustment for Powell.

"The coaches moved me to defensive tackle from linebacker, and it has taken a little while to get used to," said Powell, who has led Great Bridge to a 3-2 record so far this season. "But they recently moved me to defensive end, and I think things are going to get a lot better."

Powell hopes for an opportunity to play defensive end in college - a move he thinks could pay big dividends in the future.

"I’m big…I have lots of speed," said Powell of his ability to play end. "I get off the ball fast and I like to create havoc in the backfield. I hope for a chance to play defensive end [at Virginia Tech]."

Virginia Tech landed Powell over an offer from Virginia and interest from North Carolina and East Carolina. He is an excellent student, scoring over 1,200 on his SAT’s on his first try.

Powell is the twelfth commitment for the 2003 Virginia Tech football recruiting class. Powell is rated the #19 player in the state by TechSideline.com and #18 by the Roanoke Times. He is ranked as a three-star player (out of five) by Rivals.com.
