by Chris Horne

Not a bad week for the Virginia Tech coaching staff. Coach Beamer and company reeled in their 14th and 15th verbal commitments earlier this week, when safety Corey Gordon and tight end Duane Brown announced for the Hokies.

Gordon Chooses Hokies

Corey Gordon, a 6-3, 205 pound strong safety out of Hargrave Military Academy, made a verbal commitment to Virginia Tech. According to Hargrave Coach Robert Prunty, Gordon was offered only a few weeks ago.

Gordon hails from Gainesville High School in Gainesville, Florida, where he played wide receiver before coming to Hargrave. He has excelled on defense for Coach Prunty, who believes the Hokies are getting a terrific prospect. Prunty called Gordon intelligent and mentally and physically tough.

The super-athletic Gordon has used his ability to become a main-stay for Hargrave’s highly aggressive and sometimes dominant defense. He will play the rover position at Virginia Tech.

Gordon will enroll at Virginia Tech in January of 2003, so Hokie fans can look for him to appear in spring drills.

Duane Brown Stays In-State

One day after teammate Fontel Mines chose Virginia as his collegiate destination, Hermitage (Richmond, VA) teammate Duane Brown made his decision public…he will attend Virginia Tech.

"Duane committed to Virginia Tech last night," said Hermitage Head Coach Patrick Kane. "After visiting last weekend for the Virginia-Virginia Tech game, he just felt that Virginia Tech was the right place for him."

Brown, who played tight end and defensive end for Hermitage, will play tight end for the Hokies.

Heading into this season, he was one of the highest rated prospects in the state. A broken fibula early in the season sidelined Brown for most of his senior campaign, meaning he may not receive some of the area accolades he may deserve.

Brown has fully recovered from his injury, and looks to play varsity basketball this winter. A good student, he has already fully qualified for freshmen eligibility.

Brown is ranked as the #10 player in the state by TechSideline.com, and #12 in-state by the Roanoke Times. He is rated as a 3-star player (out of 5) and the #48 tight end in the country by Rivals.com
