Hokies Nab Two (Three?) Commitments
by Will Stewart, TechSideline.com

It was a busy recruiting weekend for the Virginia Tech football program, as the Hokies bagged commitments from two -- possibly three -- players.

The confirmed commitments are from 6-2, 240-pound defensive end Mike Gee from Queen of Peace High School in North Arlington, New Jersey, and 6-0, 180-pound wide receiver Jacob Sykes from Goldsboro High School in Goldsboro, NC. Heavily rumored but unconfirmed (as of this email) is EE Smith (Fayetteville, NC) ATH Devin Radford.

Gee is an impressive prospect, ranked as the #15 player in the state of New Jersey by Rivals.com. Gee boasts offers from not just VT, but Nebraska, UVa, Wisconsin, UNC, Boston College, and others. He runs a 4.7 forty and is targeted to be a DE in Virginia Tech's system. Gee has been a Virginia Tech fan for a long time and said of his commitment: “It’s kind of weird. I always wanted to go there since I was young. And to actually be able to go there is great.”

Gee played in only six of his teams 11 games last season because of a New Jersey transfer rule. He finished the year with 26 tackles including five sacks. He had one interception as well.

For more comments from Gee, as well as a succinct description of his playing style from Queen of Peace defensive coordinator Gabe Infante, see Chris Horne's recruiting update on Gee.

Wide receiver Jacob Sykes runs a 4.56 forty and is flying under the radar at this point in the recruiting process. Sykes has an offer from ECU and was receiving interest from Wake Forest. TSL's Chris Horne received confirmation from Sykes on his verbal and will post an update soon.

The unconfirmed commitment is from ATH Devin Radford, a 5-8, 175-pound ATH with 4.4 speed in the forty. Chris Horne is scheduled to speak with Radford's coach, Milton Butts, soon.

With Gee and Sykes, the Hokies have three commitments for the 2006 recruiting class (Radford would be the fourth), in addition to OL Clark Crum. Click here to see VT's commitments for the 2006 recruiting class.
