Virginia Tech has received a verbal from former Oakton (Vienna, VA) standout Ervin Garner. Garner, a 5-9, 165-pound prospect who played wide receiver, kick returner and defensive back for head coach Joe Thompson, graduated from Oakton earlier this month and is now awaiting word from Virginia Tech admissions. If approved, Garner will enter Virginia Tech in second summer session -- as a member of the 2007 recruiting class. "He just sent his application in," Thompson said. "We're still waiting. He wants it to happen. I think they want him in the second summer session, so I would think they'd want it done by the end of this week. The Hokies previously did not have room in their 2007 class, but 2007 signee Quillie Odom has reportedly not qualified (TSL is working on verifying this) and will have to attend Hargrave Military Academy. That opened up a spot for Garner, who is the nephew of former NFL running back Charlie Garner. In his senior season, Garner caught 31 receptions for 336 yards and three touchdowns. He earned first-team all-district honors at wide receiver, defensive back and kick returner. He also earned first-team all-Northern region wide receiver and kick returner and AP second-team all-state kick returner. For more information on Garner, including how he became available to Virginia Tech, his projected position, and his accomplishments on the football field, please see our TSL Pass update.
