DE Joe Jones Commits to VT by Chris Coleman, TechSideline.com Virginia Tech picked up a very important commitment on Wednesday when Green Run (Virginia Beach) defensive end Joe Jones informed the coaches that he will be a Hokie. Tech has a major need for defensive linemen in this class, and getting Jones is a big pickup. Jones, 6-3, 245, registered 96 tackles, 28 tackles for loss and 17 sacks during his senior season in 2007. He also blocked three kicks. He was a First Team All-Tidewater and First Team All-Beach District player. Jones chose Virginia Tech over Georgia Tech and Maryland. "I think Virginia Tech will be a great fit for him," Green Run head coach Shawn Wilson said. "I think Joe has room to put a couple of pounds on him, too. I'm sure he will get bigger and stronger with the excellent weight program that Virginia Tech has. I think he will be in a good position at defensive end. I think it'll work well. I see him becoming like a Chris Ellis-type." The Hokies now have 28 commitments for the class of 2008 (see the verbal commitment link below), including 20 from the state of Virginia. For more information,
including quotes from Jones on why he selected Virginia Tech, please see our TSL
