News had been slow on the Virginia Tech recruiting front until this past weekend. The Hokies held their first of two summer recruiting camps, and they came away with three verbal commitments. Two prospects committed for the class of 2009, and Tech even got an early start to their 2010 class as well. The first player to commit was Jerrodd Williams, a defensive back from D.W. Daniel High School in Central, South Carolina. Williams is 6-1, 185-lbs prospect who is projected to play the cornerback position for the Hokies. Williams worked out in front of the Tech coaches for the first time on Saturday, and came away with a scholarship offer. It didn’t take him long to accept the offer, as he committed before he left Blacksburg. During the 2007 season, Williams had four interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown. He’s also a talented special teams player, returning three kickoffs for touchdowns last year. Williams’ recruitment was just starting to get under way. Georgia Tech was also showing heavy interest, but the Virginia Tech offer was the one he was waiting for. The other 2009 player to commit was James Hopper, another cornerback from Fayetteville, NC. Hopper, at 5-10, 180, is another player who earned an offer after an impressive showing at camp. After discussing the offer with his family, he committed before leaving Blacksburg. Hopper is a very good athlete who has a 40-inch vertical jump. He was timed at 4.38 in the 40 yard dash at the Shrine Bowl combine earlier this year. He also had scholarship offers from Wake Forest, Duke and Elon. Hopper has a prior relationship with Lorenzo Williams, a 2008 cornerback recruit Fayetteville. "I used to go to church with him," Hopper said. "It is a big deal that he is there. At least I'll know somebody. He will be there before me, so he'll be able to show me around when I get there." The third player Tech landed is 2010 defensive tackle recruit Nic Acree, from King William High School in King William, VA. Only a rising junior in high school, Acree is already 6-6, 290. He also bench presses 425 pounds, and is a physical phenom for someone his age. He had good things to say about Tech following his visit. "Of course, being in Virginia was one good thing about [Virginia Tech], but seeing how the fans are, seeing the stadium, seeing the football program and knowing it is a good family environment were all things I liked," Acree said. According to the Newport News Daily Press, Acree already had verbal offers from Virginia, Tennessee, Penn State, Maryland and Purdue. He is expected to be one of the top prospects in the state of Virginia for the 2010 recruiting class. For more on all three
