Virginia Tech received the 18th verbal commitment of the 2009 recruiting class, when Deep Run (Chesapeake, VA) high school athlete Antone Exum made his pledge on Monday. Exum chose the Hokies over Penn State. He told the Tech coaches of his decision on Christmas Day, and he informed the Penn State coaches on the 27th. He then held a press conference today at a local restaurant and announced his decision publicly. Exum is TechSideline.com's #20 player in the state of Virginia. His commitment gives the Hokies 12 players from the TSL Top 40. Rival Virginia has 11 from the list, and out of state programs have 14 commitments from the list, led by WVU and Tennessee with three apiece. The Hokies plan on trying Exum primarily at defensive back (corner or safety) and may also give him a shot at quarterback and kick returner. For more on Exum's commitment, including quotes from Exum on why he chose the Hokies over the Nittany Lions, please see our TSL Pass update.
