This Weekend's Visit List
Committed Players: None Strange Turn in the Ahmad Brooks Story The recruitment of LB Ahmad Brooks, arguably VT's top recruiting target and one of the very top players in the country, took an odd twist Thursday night. From what we've been able to glean, Brooks was being interviewed by Glenn Harris, a sports talk show host on Newschannel 8 in Newington, VA (a station owned by Washington's ABC affiliate, WJLA). Harris asked Brooks who his favorite schools were. Brooks reportedly replied, "Virginia Tech, Virginia, and Florida State." Harris asked, "What about Tennessee?" And Brooks replied, "I don't like their coach, I met him today and didn't like him." Veeerrrry interesting, given that Brooks is scheduled to visit Tennessee this weekend. The coach Brooks was talking about is head coach Phil Fulmer, and Tennessee message board posters scrambled to cover for Fulmer. One UT poster said he tracked down Harris and asked him about it, and that Brooks told Harris off-camera that Fulmer yawned several times and got a couple of cell phone calls during his visit with Brooks. Apparently, that gave Brooks a bad impression of the visit, and "I don't like him" was probably more strongly worded than what Brooks, ordinarily a quiet young man, meant to say. Comments that Brooks later made to SECRecruiting.com support that assumption. Brooks said that the reporter, Harris, asked him some "funny questions" and that Brooks' answers "didn't come out right." Brooks went on to say that the teams he's considering -- Virginia Tech, Virginia, Tennessee, Penn State, and Florida State -- are all still even. He is still visiting UT this weekend, and then he's going to PSU on February 1st. Brooks said it may be as late as signing day before he makes his decision. More Strange Stuff, This Time About Dosh Have you heard the one about recent VT verbal QB Patrick Dosh and Florida? Well, a rumor hit the TSL boards late Thursday night that Florida wants Dosh to visit. So we got in touch with Dosh Friday afternoon at Benedictine High School to find out what was going on. "They (Florida) came by the school a couple of days ago," Dosh confirmed. "The quarterback coach who was at Marshall when Marshall was recruiting me is now at Florida (Coach Ed Zaunbrecher). So he called (Benedictine) Coach (Gene) Smith a couple of days ago and came by the school and talked to me briefly for about 15 or 20 minutes, did the whole recruiting deal. "He said 'We know you've already verbaled to Virginia Tech, but we still want a shot at you.' I think he saw some things on film that he liked, and this morning, they told me that they want me to come down there for an official visit on February 1st." So what about Dosh's commitment to Virginia Tech? "I'm completely set on Virginia Tech, like I always was. I wouldn't have verbaled if I wasn't set on Virginia Tech. But I think I'm going to go down there for the weekend, just take it all in, have a good weekend, and just see what Florida is all about. But at this point, I'm still completely one hundred percent set on Virginia Tech." Can UF change his mind? "I doubt it. I seriously doubt it. But when a school like Florida comes into the picture, you almost have to go take a look. It's very intriguing. If nothing else, it will be a fun weekend to go down there and take it all in." What about those who will say that Dosh is looking around because of the buzz that Marcus Vick may commit to Tech next week? Is Dosh scared of Vick? Dosh has been asked that question before, and he once again pooh-poohed the thought. "I haven't heard anything about Marcus Vick in the last two weeks. I'm pretty sure he'll probably end up going there (to Tech), but that's fine, I'm not going to change my decision. What Marcus Vick does has no effect on my decision." Dosh said Coach Zaunbrecher told him, "They (Florida) have less quarterbacks than Virginia Tech does. They have Rex Grossman, who has one more year, and then they have two other guys who are freshmen there. They only have three quarterbacks right now on campus. Their coach said that they want to bring in two quarterbacks this year." Florida has received a verbal from highly-rated QB Gavin Dickey out of Lincoln High in Tallahassee, Florida. Dickey is a SuperPrep Elite 50 player, rated the #4 QB in the country and the #30 player in the country overall by the magazine. SuperPrep also has Dickey listed as the #7 player in talent-rich Florida. Is new Florida Coach Ron Zook, who was the Defensive Coordinator and Assistant Head Coach at Virginia Tech under Frank Beamer in 1987, involved in trying to woo Dosh? "I don't think Coach Zook has a lot to do with this. I think Coach Z. is the one that's pretty much doing this right now." Since he didn't get the invitation for an official visit until this morning, Dosh has not talked to the Virginia Tech coaches about this yet, and he said he will discuss with his parents whether or not to take the visit to Florida on Feb. 1st. Commitments and More The Hokies got so many commitments since the last TSLMail that we're losing count: ATH Jimmy Williams, DB Demetrius Hodges, WR Robert Parker, and DL Jonathan Lewis all verbaled to Tech in the last week. This brings the Hokie commitment list up to 15. Meanwhile, on the downside of the ledger, the Hokies lost out to Notre Dame on DE Brian Mattes, who committed to the Irish early this week. Mattes had been waiting forever to take his visit to ND, and when he did make it last weekend, he was hooked. Rivals.com is reporting that QB Marcus Vick will announce his college choice on Monday or Tuesday of next week, and Mike Stevens of WDBJ-7 in Roanoke reported that LB Justin London will announce his verbal at a press conference next Thursday, January 31st. Vick is expected to choose the Hokies, but London is a
little harder to read. He has UCLA and Maryland on his list with the Hokies (he recently eliminated Tennessee), but those in and around
the Tech program feel very good about their chances for landing him. |

Tech to Release Football Schedule Today | |||||
Tech to Release Football Schedule Today The Hokies are due to release their 2002 football schedule Friday afternoon -- twelve games will be listed, with a thirteenth "preseason classic" on August 24th or 25th still in the works. Tulsa had been the frontrunner for the preseason game, but the Golden Hurricane are out now, and the field is wide open. Other possible candidates previously mentioned included Wyoming and SMU. Tech officials hope to have the 13th game set by the end of next week. The schedule had not been released when this TSLMail "went
to press" at 3:15 Friday, but when it is released, we'll send out another TSLMail with the details. |

Tech Basketball Notes | |||||
The Tech women's basketball team is ranked #16 and #17 in both major polls this week, but they may take a tumble after a 75-59 road loss to Syracuse this week. The Hokies are now 15-3, 6-1 in the Big East (tied for second with Boston College, whom they have defeated). TV Notes:
