Big-Time Recruits Checking Out the VT/LSU Game

Lane Stadium promises to be rocking this Sunday for the Hokies and the LSU Tigers, and some of Tech's biggest recruiting targets will be on hand. Over 50 recruits will be there (let's hear it for a Sunday game on Labor Day weekend, which makes it easy for recruits to travel to VT), and the list includes LB Xavier Adibi, DL Vince Redd, DL Chris Ellis, OL/DL Carlton Powell, LB Brett Warren, LB Vince Hall, VT commit Kory Robertson, VT commit Matt Welsh, DE/TE Duane Brown, and WR Fontel Mines.

One note of interest is that Redd, Powell, and Adibi were present at the Arkansas State game, so this makes their second straight trip to the 'Burg to see the Hokies play.

Get in Your Seats Early Sunday

Something special is going to happen Sunday, so be sure to arrive at your seats early to see what it is. As we "went to press" with TSLMail, the news had not been officially released by VT, so just take our word for it, you won't want to miss what's going down.

How early is early? Well, no one is saying, but we suggest you "park it" in your seat with about 15-20 minutes to go before the 2:30 kickoff. That ought to give you enough time to make sure you don't miss out.

Western Michigan Game Time Set for Noon

Virginia Tech's September 28th road game against Western Michigan has been slated for a noon kickoff and ESPN Regional (ESPN+) telecast. Television clearances for the mid-Atlantic region will be determined and released at a later date. The game will also reach a national audience as part of ESPN's GamePlan pay-per-view package that is available through local cable providers, DIRECTV and DISH networks.

Depth Chart Changes for LSU Game ... Sort Of

This Sunday against LSU, according to the game note depth charts released on hokiesports.com, two players will start who did not start against Arkansas State. Rover Michael Crawford and whip linebacker Brandon Manning, neither of whom were listed as starters against ASU, will start against LSU.

Last week's game notes had Billy Hardee and Mike Daniels listed as the starters at rover and whip, respectively. In reality, Manning and Crawford both started last week.

Don't blame hokiesports.com, though -- the TV broadcasters got it wrong, too. They listed Manning as a starter, and Hardee as a starter, and they were only half right. Manning started, but Crawford's #21 jersey can clearly be seen on the field from play one, not Hardee's #25.

In the end, it was a wash against ASU. Manning and Crawford were in for 31 plays, and Daniels and Hardee were in for 30.

TSL Roster Card for LSU Game Available

TSL's popular roster card is ready for the LSU game. It's a PDF file, so you'll need to download and install Adobe Acrobat Reader to read it. If you've got the Adobe Reader, you can download the roster card by clicking here.

Please note that TSL's LSU game preview will be posted Friday afternoon.

Board of Visitors Approves West Side Expansion

Monday, Virginia Tech's Board of Visitors formally gave the go-ahead to Tech's planned expansion of the West (press box) side of Lane Stadium, at a cost of "at least" $47.8 million. The details are as follows:

  • 800 chairback seats in a glass-enclosed section
  • 15 or 18 luxury boxes
  • two-story memorabilia display for Tech teams
  • new or renovated press-box tower
  • academic support offices, ticket offices, and Hokie Club offices
  • seating capacity increase from 65,115 to 66,233

The Tech Athletic Department had considered proposing an expanded West side that would have added about 5,500 more seats, but that plan would have run about $72 million, or $25 million more than the approved expansion, so it was scrapped in favor of the 66,233-seat version of the stadium.

Construction will begin after the 2003 season or the 2004 season, depending upon how early fundraising goes. If construction starts in 2003, it will be ready for the 2005 season; otherwise, it won't be ready until the 2006 season.

The Hokie Club will have to raise about $20 million of the required $47.8 million.
