This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

At the end of last week, Virginia Tech offered Rockbridge County defensive tackle Jon Kirchner. Kirchner, who now has offers from Virginia Tech, Virginia, Duke, Maryland, Stanford, and West Virginia, is looking to make a decision between the Hokies and Cavaliers in July.

Several out-of-state prospects are likely to make their way to Blacksburg this summer. Mount Carmel (PA) offensive line prospect Jon Skinner plans to camp at Virginia Tech in July, while Moon Area (Coraopolis, PA) defensive tackle AQ Shipley and Deptford (NJ) fullback/linebacker Michael Green will make unofficial trips during the summer. Tech has offered Green, who lists Ohio State, Virginia, and Illinois as his current favorites. Virginia Tech likes the 6-1, 235 pound Green as a fullback prospect.

Virginia Tech has officially offered and is currently in the top five for Eastern Regional (NJ) OL Phil Trautwein. Trautwein is an enormous prospect at 6-7, 300 pounds, and likes VT's “ability to produce linemen.” Florida (who may be the outright leader), Penn State, Iowa, and North Carolina round out Trautwein's top five list.

Several in-state prospects will be attending one-day camps at Virginia Tech. Franklin County cornerback Patrick Preston, Indian River running back Brandon Ore, and Salem (Salem, VA) linebacker Austin Casey have plans to participate in the July camp.

Ore, who is one of the rising prospects following the May evaluation period, has been offered by VT, UVA, Penn State, UNC, and Maryland. At 6-2, 195 pounds, he runs a 4.4 in the 40, has a vertical leap around 38 inches, and will likely receive more scholarship offers by the end of his senior season.
