1,593 Percent by Will Stewart, TechSideline.com This week, in doing some research for an article I was working on, I pulled out an old game program that I have from Tech's 1972 football game against Houston. Hokies with a sense of VT football history know the importance of that game: that's the game in which Don Strock set many Hokie passing records by going 34-of-53 for 527 yards. Each of those stats -- completions, attempts, and yardage -- are single-game Tech records. (Sidenote: despite all the attempts and yardage, Strock did not set a record for touchdowns in that game. That record was 4, set by Strock against Ohio U. that year, and equaled by Maurice DeShazo twice and Michael Vick once. Bryan Randall broke it this year, though -- see below.) Those records all still stand, despite Bryan Randall's amazing performance in the Carrier Dome last year against Syracuse. Randall was 23-of-34 for 504 yards and 5 touchdowns. The 5 TD's are a new single-game record, and he would have had the yardage record, had Tech receiver Richard Johnson not dropped a potential 74-yard TD pass in that game. But I digress. I was looking at the game program in order to read about former VT football coach and athletic director Frank Moseley. Moseley coached the Hokies from 1951-1960, and was AD from 1951-1978 at VT. He has a page dedicated to him and his accomplishments in the 1972 Houston game program, and one sentence really jumped out at me:
Wow, I sure hope "Mose" didn't spend it all in one place! These days, the Hokies spend about $2 million on the football coaching staff salaries alone.
As recently as 1987-88, the VT athletic budget was only a fraction of what it is today. The 1987 preseason football issue of the Hokie Huddler (now hokiesports the newspaper) ran a letter from then-Virginia Tech president William Lavery about his plans for reorganizing the athletic department in the wake of the 1986-87 football and basketball NCAA probation scandals. Near the end of the letter, Lavery wrote:
In 2000-01, the most recent year for which the Chronicle of Higher Education has financial data, the Hokies had an athletic budget of $25.4 million. That's an increase from 1972-2000 of, according to my trusty 20-year old HP 15C calculator, 1,593%. Just for fun, if you take the 2000-01 VT athletic budget and grow it by another 1,593% over 28 years, you would get a projected 2028-29 VT athletic budget of ... $430 million. But that won't happen ... will it? In any event, one wonders what Frank Moseley would have thought about a $25 million athletic budget, and what Bill Lavery would have thought just 16 years ago, had he known the budget would go up by a factor of 5. This Week in Recruiting Following an unofficial visit to Blacksburg last month, Conestoga Valley quarterback Jordan Steffy received an official scholarship offer from Virginia Tech. The Hokies remain in his top six schools and seem to be in great shape for an official visit. Check out Steffy’s comments on his visit and ACC expansion in his latest update. The Hokies have entered the picture for Roanoke (NC) cornerback Trimaine Goddard. The 5-11 Goddard, who has not been offered by Virginia Tech, lists the Hokies in his top five. He visited Virginia Tech for the Nike Camp, and came away excited about his experience. Miami Edison (FL) offensive line prospect Jacky Claude has narrowed his list to five schools. Claude, who received an offer from Virginia Tech, lists only Florida, LSU, Ohio State, NC State, and Miami (FL). Other news…Stafford (VA) offensive line prospect John Bradshaw committed to West Virginia over offers from VT, UNC, Duke, and WVU….recruited walk-on running back Thomas McClelland of Stafford is up to 5-11, 193 pounds, according to head coach Roger Pierce. Pierce, who was being recruited by VT to play running back, possesses the work ethic to be a solid contributor to the team. …DB Lamonte Stanfield, Jr, and OL Michael Wood plan to visit VT for camp later this month. Wood plans to stay all three days. RB/LB Dominic Scott has transferred from Nansemond River (VA) to Western Branch. The Hokies are recruiting him as a fullback. Next week, I will travel to New Jersey for the Adidas ABCD basketball camp.
