Writing Thursday's News and Notes item about the 11 players who have left the Hokie football team -- or been kicked off -- since the start of the 2002 football season led to a discussion on the message board, in which a poster asked, "Is that number normal?"

I always respond to that question with, "Define normal," but I resisted the urge to do so in this case. Eleven players sounds like a lot, and it's certainly not a low number, but it isn't completely unreasonable or unprecedented.

The good news is that one of the 11 -- Chris Buie -- already has his VT degree, and another of the 11 -- Will Hunt -- plans to stay enrolled at Tech and finish out his degree at VT. Three of the other former players are still listed on the people finder on the VT web site, indicating a high degree of probability that they're still enrolled as students and are progressing towards a degree.

The whole discussion of attrition gave me the idea of arbitrarily picking out a recruiting class and seeing how many of them lasted all four or five years.

So, let's take the 1999 recruiting class, which was headlined by Nathaniel Adibi, Keith Willis, and Andrae Harrison. That recruiting class, as listed by the Feb. 15, 1999 Hokie Huddler, consisted of 23 players. Here's how they break down:

Still on the team and in good standing: DE Nathaniel Adibi, DE Cols Colas, ROV Michael Crawford, OL Jacob Gibson, DT Kevin Lewis, LB Vegas Robinson, CB Garnell Wilds, WR Ernest Wilford, TE Keith Willis

Finished all four years of eligibility: OL Anthony Davis, WR Shawn Witten.

Left the team before their playing career was done: FB Ryan Angelo, WR Andrae Harrison, CB Lee Baker, LB Chris Buie (graduated, as noted above), OL Charles Hattan, OL Anthony Nelson, LB Deon Provitt, DE Joe Simington, FB Marvin Urquhart, FB Joe Wilson, LB Thomas Woodley.

Never made it to Tech: DT Marlan Hicks.

Out of 23 players, that's just 11 that either finished up (Davis and Witten) or are still in good standing. Of the nine guys listed in the first category (Adibi, Colas, etc.), it looks like all nine will be at VT for the duration, barring any unexpected developments. All nine are contributors.

For graduation purposes, 11 out of 22 (Hicks never enrolled, so he doesn't count) would come out to a 50% graduation rate, if all 11 players that didn't leave early graduated within six years of first enrolling. 50% isn't anything to write home about, but it is middle-of-the-pack in the latest figures for ACC football graduation rates, as detailed in a recent TSL Pass article.

And it's better than VT's current four-year graduation rate statistic of 40%, which applies to the freshman classes that entered in 1992, 1993, 1994, and 1995.
