Shrinking Recruits With the football team arriving on Wednesday this week, Hokie fans got to participate in one of the great annual traditions: The Horror of the Shrinking Recruits. You know the drill: recruiting heights and weights are inflated, while 40 times are deflated, to make recruits out to be bigger and faster than they really are. When they arrive on campus, fans are aghast to find out that the monsters they recruited aren't quite as monstrous as they were in their recruiting profiles. BeamerBall.com ran the heights and weights of the entire team on Thursday, so just for fun, we thought we'd take a look and see which recruits "shrunk" the most, victims not of something they did or didn't do, but of those darn recruiting profiles. First of all, let me provide a link to last year's recruiting class -- you can click it to find out the heights and weights of the class as included in their recruiting profiles. Here are the 2003 recruits who arrived this summer/fall. The following table does not include:
So the 14 recruits who arrived for this fall and were weighed and measured, if you look at their recruiting profile numbers, average just over 6-3 and just over 230 pounds. Note that none of them are listed under 6-1. What about their actual heights and weights upon arriving at VT? If you crunch the BeamerBall.com numbers for the 14 players listed above, you get: Actual Average Height: 6-1.5 (versus 6-3.1 listed height) The recruits didn't lose any weight, and as a matter of fact, gained an average of half a pound over their recruiting profiles. But they "shrank" 1.5 inches, and two of them came in under 6 feet, at 5-11 (Josh Hyman), and 5-11.5 (Vince Hall). Other highlights: Recruit who "grew" the most: None. They all measured shorter than listed. Recruit who "shrank" the most: John Kinzer, 3 inches. Listed at 6-5, measured at 6-2. Recruit who "gained" the most weight: Kory Robertson, 26.5 pounds. Listed at 270, measured at 296.5. Recruit who "lost" the most weight: John Kinzer, 25 pounds. Listed at 255, measured at 230. Recruits who came in heavier than listed by TSL: Xavier Adibi, Duane Brown, Chris Ellis, Vince Hall, Kory Robertson, Matt Welsh. Recruits who came in lighter than listed by TSL: Barry Booker, David Clowney, James Griffin, Michael Hinton, John Kinzer, Roland Minor, Carlton Powell. Recruits who came in the same as listed weight: Josh Hyman. By the way, don't sweat John Kinzer being 6-2, 230, instead of 6-5, 255. Those who have met Kinzer in person keep using the same word to describe him: "monster." He is working out at fullback, and TSL was told that he is projected to remain there as a "true fullback" (as opposed to an H-back like Jeff King).
Virginia Tech has been recruiting the state of New Jersey pretty hard this year. The Hokies have offered several prospects, including Millsville HS defensive end/tackle Dwayne Hendricks and Washington Township HS linebacker Hugh D’Imperio. Hendricks is more open at this point in his process, and hopes to narrow his list to ten schools by September. D’Imperio mentioned Virginia Tech, UNC, and Wisconsin as schools he would like to officially visit. Don Bosco Prep (NJ) linebacker Brian Toal likes the Hokies as one of his top ten schools. Toal, who is one of the most talented linebackers in the country, likes the Hokies "aggressive defense. I like their style of defense." Toal wants to wait until after his senior season to think about his official visits. Harold Dalton, a safety from Woodrow Wilson HS in Camden, NJ, likes Virginia Tech as one of his favorite schools, according to head coach Mike McBride. Dalton is a safety prospect who is an "outstanding tackler" according to McBride. Purdue and UNC are also high on his list. Virginia Tech has offered Lynchburg Christian (VA) standout Rashad Jennings, and appears to be recruiting Jennings’ teammate, linebacker Tyler Tipton. Tipton gained attention by being the second-ranked linebacker at the Nike Camp in Blacksburg earlier this year. Wake Forest, Marshall, and Pitt are also recruiting Tipton. Video highlights of Hermitage linebacker Andrew Bowman have been posted for TSL Pass members. Not only is Bowman one of the fastest linebackers around, but he is a ferocious hitter. Bowman has received nine scholarship offers to date – Virginia Tech, Virginia, Tennessee, and UNC among others. It appears Virginia Tech may begin recruiting Jamar Adams, a talented safety prospect from Butler HS in North Carolina. Adams mentioned that the Hokies have been writing him and indicated that they would be calling him once September 1st comes around. That is the date when schools can begin calling recruits. Adams has received offers from Michigan, Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Wake Forest, and Vanderbilt. Westfield’s dynamic duo Sean Glennon and Eddie Royal visited Virginia Tech this week. Be sure to stay tuned to TSL Pass for recruiting updates following their visit. For updates and information on all these players and more, subscribe to TechSideline Pass.
