While the 2005-2006 Atlantic Coast Conference basketball season does not get underway for several months, the NBA Draft will be here before everyone realizes it (June 28). As the days dwindle down, more and more college basketball players will declare what their futures hold -- NBA, or another year at the college level? The quartet of underclassmen talent at North Carolina has decided: Sean May, Rashad McCants, Raymond Felton, and Marvin Williams are all NBA-bound. Duke’s big man, Shelden Williams, has said he is staying in Durham to finish his college career. The most notable ACC player who has not made up his mind yet is Maryland’s John Gilchrist, who is still weighing his decision. Besides the underclassmen departing early, the ACC is losing some top-notch talent to graduation. Clemson’s Sharrod Ford, Georgia Tech’s stable of seniors, Duke’s Daniel Ewing, North Carolina State’s Julius Hodge, and North Carolina’s Jawad Williams are just a few. There is a perception, based primarily on UNC, Georgia Tech, and Wake Forest getting cleaned out by graduation and early NBA defections, that the ACC will be down next year. Don't be so sure. Of the league's 12 teams, seven of them (including VT) will return four starters, and an eighth team (Maryland) returns all five starters, if Gilchrist stays. A ninth, Virginia, brings back three starters. That means that three quarters of the league is returning 36 out of 45 starters, or 80% of their starters. Not a bad ratio. Here is a breakdown of the returning starters and players lost to graduation and possibly the NBA Draft, for all 12 ACC teams, Boston College included. This table will give you a good idea of who's going to have experience coming back next season, and who's not. (* Note that underclass players marked with an asterisk have not hired an agent and are therefore eligible to return to the college ranks if they don't like their draft position.)
